Re: Kidney beans

i used to make a lasagne recipe that was on the side of the packet of tesco's lasagne verdi. it was really good but haven't made it for years and i've lost the recipe but this one looks good, too - https://boldbeanco.com/blogs/beanspo-recipes/red-bean-lasagne. i've also made a red bean paté which is...

thanks for the heads-up, aero, i think i've read most of her output, now, including her bits written for the medieval murderers.
i'm on the seventh in the 'rivers of london' series, now.

Re: "Danish Peasant Girl with a Veil"

Scullion, part of the point of package blancmange was that as adults didn't on the whole eat it, it could be made up by the kids themselves, an early step in cooking and maths, if as I did. you only made up half a sachet (two portions) maybe in your house. i never made up a percentage of a packet w...

Re: "Danish Peasant Girl with a Veil"

i really, really miss frugrains - i have trawled the web for the ingredients to make some. they disappeared from the holland and barret shop in the mid to late nineties. the kids and i used eat them like sweets. i've only recently found that 'grapevine' sell the whole dried bananas - though i have m...

Re: "Danish Peasant Girl with a Veil"

i think i must have had a deprived childhood - we never had anything called cremola, never heard of the eiffel tower stuff (other than the real one), didn't have visits from the corona drinks van and never had bread in milk (or tea) and never had junket. the only time i had a sugar sandwich, which s...

Re: "Danish Peasant Girl with a Veil"

that was a nice series. i heard it when it was on r4 'ordinaire'. i've never heard of the 'danish peasant girl'. i'm not sure there are any recipes that take me back like that. i don't tend to cook anything my mother managed to ruin. maybe the nearest memory lane thing is sun quick orange juice that...

Re: Gardening Resources & Tips

our rhubarb, on the allotment is in full sun but neighbours who used to live over the road had a large bed on the north side of their place, close to the building, so it had shade for a lot of the day. it produced more than they could use - really long fat stems - i made some lovely wine from it. it...

back to discard recipes - i have just made these.
they were really good.
definitely will make them again as they use up a good amount of discard.
there are other discard recipes on the website that look good, too.

Re: Gluten, onion and garlic free?

i would hit the 'free from' aisle in the supermarket, then and save yourself a load of effort. there's cake, biscuits and snack bits there that you can guarantee are free of gluten. pretty sure you can get gluten free pizza, too, if you need a savoury hit, gf crackers and cottage cheese, humous (hom...

Re: Gluten, onion and garlic free?

you can get ready made gluten free puff pastry (jusrol) from tesco if you want to go down a 'pie' route to make it feel a little less of an obviously adapted meal. i have made a vegetarian version of sabrina ghayour's bastilla with it (and with quorn) for a meal that included a coeliac guest. very t...

Re: What are you baking this week?

So many cafes these days sell sponge cake drizzled with water icing and call it Lemon Drizzle. i probably embarrassed suffs by complaining about the lemon drizzle cake, at a national trust place we went to, that was just that - a really disappointing slice of cake. i like my lemon drizzle to be alm...

Re: Book Club

i've just finished all of the 'falconer' books by ian morson (medieval murders set in oxford) and have just started one, recommended, called 'rivers of london' by ben aaronovich - which i now see is the beginning of another series.
it's quirky and interesting. the books get good reviews on a--z-n.
