Dutch oven means many different thing - but generally in cooking a big iron pot with a lid that can be used like an oven when surrounded by embers or the kind grandma Lil had that hangs on the bars of a coal fire grate, like this

Then of course there’s the dutchie, to be passed on the left hand side, like the port. :D

Who was it had lots of figs? I think this looks lush. Must try walnut Madeleines. Nigel Slater.

I may have to try it. I think we had a discussion about the skin and bones before but I can't find it.

Let me know when you are able to try this ... I am pretty flexible on days and times .. :thumbsup

She appears to have dispensed with the actual recipe :D

Felicity C has of course had a go, which is pretty much what I'd do, though I'm more given to fattoush the Middle Eastern equivalent

For comparison, fattoush

Another hard read. I wish my husband would eat goulash but it's too foreign apparently . . .

Two lovely offerings in today’s Guardian.

I do love a good flapjack.

And a Fraisier cake from the bonkers Kim-Joy.

It’s very pretty. So long as you are keen on frogs.

I'd prefer looking at it to eating it - mint, cream & pistachio together, bleugh

I suppose one would have try it to be sure but I'd make sure that someone else was paying for the ingredients first! I have always meant to make a proper Fraisier, maybe next year.

Interested re the jumbo oats in flapjack too. I have never found them to absorb the liquid (melted) ingredients very well.

Not terribly struck with any of the apple recipes. DD thinks that baked apples are the food of the devil, we had them quite often when she was a child and I had no idea. I've never understood what's not to like about them.

My kids all think apples are boring. That’s what comes of having four different varieties of tree in the garden. :o

I don’t much like mint in desserts. Except Vienneta.

That can work both ways PP - I grew up in an orchard, I love apples, I look forward to the end of summer when the nice ones ones return.

But I don't have to try the frasier - mint and cream together is just plain wrong for my taste buds, and wasting an expensive ingredient like pistachio can only make it worse :( My idea of hell is mint chocolate chip ice cream,

Blimey. That's more than a bit convoluted, Felicity.

Yep. On the one hand, those who are not in poverty want fair trade for our food producers wherever they are in the world and to keep food which is purely filling Trump's pockets or bringing down rain forests out. On the other hand, those who are in poverty just want something to eat. I was delighted to see Nancy Pelosi say that the USA would not sign a deal with a country who went back on its word, I think the political surprises of the past few years are just going to keep on coming. That isn't helping those in poverty though (and a prospect of growing poverty). In the interim period, it seems to me that communities are getting together more and more to help the people in them rather than waiting for 'someone else' to do it which has been a downside of an even slightly nanny state. I suspect it is the way forward and will eventually lead to the social changes that many would like to see, I hope it doesn't take a serious uprising to do so, I do fear it is going to be a slow process though and that those who care will be driven to help out more.
