Re: Masterchef is upon us
As I have said before, definitely the best MC. The first five minutes was taken up by a brief history of the show including the original British version, complete with Lloyd Grossman. I think that there was a brief glimpse of Joan Bunting but as I never met Joan it is difficult to tell.
All this years competitors are previous runners up. I shall be very cross if Poh wins, my money is on Reynold.

I am enjoying this.
As the contestants have all done well in a previous series there is no "car crash cooking".
I'm also v pleased the music has been turned down!

I hope that they are starting elimination rounds on MC Aus soon, that kitchen looks crowded
There is nothing to be done about it but some contestants were in the early series so have had at least ten years catering experience, others were in more recent series so have less experience. Do they make allowances for that?

I'm pretty sure that IS Joan on the Masterchef Australia introduction! Only on screen for half a second though, about 10 seconds in, in the yellow top. Dreadful quality video, I think it's been filmed straight off the TV...

Dear me, we're already 11 very loooong episodes in, 15 and 3/4 hours of programming (of which I've probably watched eight to ten with fast forwarding), and we've only lost 3 of the 24 contestants.
I had a look at the Wiki page for the series (and very nearly found out the winner by mistake), and it runs for SIXTY ONE episodes!!!!!
That's far too much time to waste on it for me, at an average of 1.5 hours per show, that's another 75 hours to wade through, so I think I'll bow out now, even though it's good food going on.

I like it but I discard the masterclasses and the restaurant challenges
That usually cuts it down a bit.

Re: Masterchef is upon us
I have to confess to having seen the entire series 12 of MC Aus, we saw the last episode yesterday. It struck us that there was some very dodgy judging, some contestants seemed to be favoured. It was interesting how the coped with Covid, by the time that it struck Australia enough contestants had been eliminated to ensure social distancing.

I confess to having watched episode 12 last night, but fast forwarded to the judging, so an hour and a half became half an hour.
Good food, but they are all seasoned professionals.
The "favouritism" thing, it's human nature. An effervescent, attractive and outgoing competitor is always going to get the vote over a miserable sod if they present identical dishes.
Maybe they overdo their enthusiasm, but I find the judges far more user-friendly than any of the previous judges, and I can even watch them eating without averting my eyes the way I have to when I see Torode and Pasty shovelling food in their gobs. Maybe I'll get tired of their zeal.
One thing odd: there's one contestant that they seem to have almost ignored so far. I wonder what the back story is on that. Maybe she's just not good television.

What was the point of the "immunity pin" when the lady wasn't able to use it when she really needed it? Daft.

She chose not to use it in round 1, then it looked like she wasn't given the opportunity in round 2.
I agree, daft rule.

Although if Son-in-Law eggs is the best you can come up with for "gooey", I think you deserve a slap on the wrist.
I've always made them with hardboiled eggs, how on earth would you shell a half cooked egg ready for deep frying?.

I hadn't heard of son-in-law eggs.
A self saucing lemon sponge would have been my dish.
Although the word "gooey" is a bit off-putting.

Re: Masterchef is upon us
It's a Thai dish - if I was on Mastermind (as opposed to Masterchef) Thai food would possibly be my specialist subject, so I tend to forget that it's a personal obsession and that the stuff inside my head isn't necessarily common knowledge!
Having said that, my mind went blank when they said "gooey", all I could think of was Chocolate Fondant, which has of course been the downfall of countless Masterchef contestants over the years.

I'm discussing that "pasta not pasta" dish from last night's programme on this thread...

I'm finding Poh really annoying.
I don't remember her being so irritating.

Re: Masterchef is upon us
It's all a bit happy-clappy, and it must take some stupendous editing to have removed all the friction that the team challenges must surely have generated! It is entertaining, but the way it panders to the "twist" elements the best cook may already have gone. In terms of telly programmes, I wonder if it's actually more akin to "It's a Knockout" than the original British Masterchef.

Ditto, it all the " I really don't know what to make" then finishing with seconds to spare that annoyed me

Re: Masterchef is upon us
I think removing the recipe during an elimination challenge was pure bullying.
Re: Masterchef is upon us
Haaaa!
I saw both "twists" coming a mile off (swapping the entire team halfway through in the first round and having the recipes taken away in the second round), especially as they were ramming home the fact that they should read the entire recipe in that second test...
My short term memory is pants, I would have completely nosedived in that situation.
Maybe the lady that lost hadn't heard what they said, I can't believe that she would have ignored the dish's creator's instructions so blatantly.
