Ah well, next gift can be the stripy top or the beret
Actually my dad used to wear a beret when commuting by bike, stayed on well and was fairly waterproof - he went to work by taking his bike to Portsmouth on the Gosport ferry so he needed to cover his head

Re: In Awe of Onions
So Suff, if your bro' was to ride a bike and peddle (geddit)! his onions, how would you dress him or think he would like to be dressed ??
The Roscoff onions I bought in France were not cheap either...

Re: In Awe of Onions
Suffs, awesome indeed, indeed. I was just wondering how many onions there were in a ton (more or less) after seeing the 3,500 ton store.
As our PM wants doctors to recommend cycling to counter obesity, perhaps peddling/pedalling onions might return, although given the cost of a bike it'd make the onions eyewatering in price as well.
*Gets coat*

I think people believe it’s a myth, but I lived within cycling distance of the ferry ports
Believe it or not, the ‘onion Johnnie’ was a regular visitor to our 3rd Floor tenement flat in Glasgow. My mum’s French was excellent and he always stayed for a cup of tea and a chat!
Re: In Awe of Onions
Just remembered another interesting onion snippet. I have seen on lots of cruise menus Videlia Onion Tart, which apparently is an American variety - quite sweet I think? Not tried it as there were always more interesting things to have!
Re: In Awe of Onions
Just googled Videlia onion tart ... there’s a huge variations in the recipes online, including one with evaporated milk and powdered leek soup ... I didn’t think I’d ever have a need to use this but now I have

Re: In Awe of Onions
Vidalia onions are sweet onions - I looked them up ages ago because characters in the Patricia Cornwell crime novels seemed incapable of making a salad or a sandwich without them
I just looked them up again and it seems they have the US equivalent of a PDO or appellation, they are grown in Georgia in a restricted area
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vidalia_onion
So they should make a very nice tart in the hands of a good chef!

One of my new favourite supermarket finds is M&S pickled red onions . Lovely with feta in a salad

They sound interesting Amy, I'll probably start to venture into shops next month, if I remember I'll check out M&S in Hertford.
