Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
I'm going to Tescos tomorrow, thanks Sakkarin.
They're my favourite additive to many baked things.

Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
The best value at the moment that I know of is the Loch Fyne Smoked Salmon Trimmings at Costco.
They come in a vac pack and the bits are very random. Anything from thin strips to a chunk of a tail. 1Kg for under £9.00 The nicely sliced salmon, from which these bits have presumably been trimmed, are going for three times the price.
If you want smoked salmon for sandwiches or a quiche, it's ideal.

It will freeze down well too, aero 280. Salmon always does because of its high oil content. What a shame I don't go to Cosco.
Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
Douwe Egberts and Nescafe Gold instant coffee (c.200g) both on good offers in Ocado, which usually means elsewhere too.
Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
They were selling Brie de Meaux for 89p at Lidl, unfortunately they'd sold out by the time I turned up...

Re: Bargain Basement
Waitrose has gone from full price/ silly prices during lockdown.
To loads of offers on the shelves. Especially yoghurts. I'll be shopping there for the next week or so.

Re: Bargain Basement
I’m finding Waitrose very odd at the moment. They seem to have stopped some of their regular lines in favour of branded stuff. I guess it may be the Covid effect, who knows? Ocado certainly isn’t carrying as much of their stuff as usual either but they are winding down the contract aren’t they?
Little old lady I swim with has been upset that she couldn’t get the egg boxes with only 4 eggs which they usually do.

Re: Bargain Basement
I think I read somewhere that shops had been told to concentrate on particular priority items in some departments, I suspect that's why I couldn't find canelloni the other day.
Just 4 eggs? What's that all about? I don't think I've ever seen eggs in anything smaller than half dozens.

Re: Bargain Basement
Ocado says its M&S partnership starts in September so perhaps Waitrose is trying to reinvigorate its own base.
I read that shops had given over more space to staples initially; is that still so? One reason I shop with Ocado is for their wide range of non-standard stuff, plus they rarely need to do substitutes.

Yep. Morries do them too. Special individual catering (for old people probably). I often buy them as OH doesn't do eggs in any form and resident son is a vegan. This particular old lady friend goes to the Northwood Waitrose and was told they'd stopped doing them in the smaller stores. I just looked at the large South Harrow shop and they had them, along with quail eggs and packets of 6 designer duck eggs. It all still looks a bit random.
They'd run out of own brand vodka though

Cheese!!
As a change from the usual cheddar and stilton from the butcher, I have been dabbling with some of the cheeses on offer at Costco. So Camembert, Comté, and a very tasty, and cheap, Coastal brand Cheddar.
But today I got a delivery of a random selection from the Northumberland Cheese Company. I've not used them before, but they offered 1.6Kg of cheese for £26. This compares with a random selection from Neals Yard of the "Small Selection", which is 700g for £27...
The selection maybe less traditional, but it looks OK.
Two pieces of Stilton mixed with mango & ginger, a piece of Double Gloucester mixed with onion and chive. Not sure about those. A piece of real Stilton. A piece of Cheddar. A piece of Lancashire, two pieces of Norfolk Mardler and a selection of button sized date, cranberry and walnut "things".
Anyone know the Norfolk Mardler? I've not had, or heard of it, before.

At the other end of the spectrum, Lidl Red Leicester is 89p for 400g this weekend (£1.01 lb/ £2.23 kg)...
Or it might be next weekend, I find their posters confusing.

Re: Bargain Basement
Annoyingly Tesco have started selling their eggs in plastic boxes again.
I always buy a dozen large free range and the other week picked them up as usual. Only when I got home did I realise that there were only a pack of 10 for £2.20
However this week I bought 2 boxes of 6 for the same price. Still large free range but 2 extra eggs for the same price - but also extra plastic

Re: Bargain Basement
I like the Coastal cheddar aero, the first piece I had was the best, crunchy with calcium lactate crystals, the cat and I became calcium lactate addicts. But it’s all been good
I thought I’d make keema mattar while fresh peas are in season, as I do think it’s nicer, I was lucky enough to get a pack of lamb mince rtc to 75p
Unfortunately the peas had gone up from 65p to £1.50 but I won’t use them all and as they are beautifully fresh I’ll have a go at pea pod soup
