I should do that ... I have a lily plant that has got it's leaves chewed round the edges and NO, it's not lily beetle - I would have spotted that culprit !

Re: gardening resources and tips, etc.
I was given a plant yesterday by some new neighbours as a thank you for me sending round my baking projects ... It is Scaevola (or Fan Plant ?) and seems to grow naturally in the warmer parts of Australia and Pacific Islands .. and it's seems it's edible. I don't think it's uncommon here, probably treated as an annual or tender perennial. Rainbow, have you ever heard/seen this ?

Not heard ot it, Pat. Looks nice though.
I have a lot of pests in the garden. Holes in my broadbean and pea leaves - caterpillars, I imagine, but I can't find any.
Multiple types of aphids, and now slugs and snails. Getting a bit stressed by it. I am not growing so many peas and broad beans to be able to afford to sacrifice some.
I have some new pea and bean seedlings to plant out. Wondering if there is anyway to protect them. Would fleece jackets exclude too much sunlight?

how big are the holes? flea beetle? a midnight feast by slugs or snails?

Yes, it's fun and games central here.
If you have semi circle bites in your leaves, always from the outside edge or bites on the stems you may have weevils. They are bad enough, but their root-chomping offspring are worse. They shave off the roots of roses, grasses and hydrangeas and you can pick up the dead plant with no problems. They are clever, they get up very late, after midnight, I would say.

On closer inspection, it might be.
Ditto broad beans. The little B*s***ds have been everywhere.
I should probably go out with a torch later. They are probably hiding under the pots, which are a bit too heavy to lift.
I found a pea though

If the damage to the leaves looks a bit like this, then you might have weevils, too.

No. It doens't. (I hesitate to say phew in case I jinx things.)
It's snails. It turns out that under the pot's rim is a snail hotel.
I just inadvertently dug in a clutch of snail eggs in failed dahlia pot.

I have put the pot on a metal chair. This might help.
Also pit some pet-safe slug things down.

Thompson and Morgan are selling all their seed packets for £1 today and tomorrow in case anyone is interested. A bit of a risk if you are buying seed for next year as won't know the use by date.
Re: gardening resources and tips, etc.
just looked at their website - most of the ones in the sale are out of stock.

I clicked on about 15 packets and all were avaiable. That was this morning though.
All of their seeds are supposed to be in the 'sale'...
Are they doing a slight of hand?

I seem to have another random vermin hit
Something has neatly removed all the soft feathery leaves off my chervil, leaving just the stems looking like the little bits of plastic left after you make an Airfix model or similar
Obvious culprit would be a snail or slug but I haven’t had any in years, as it’s a roof terrace they don’t come up under their own steam, and I haven’t brought in any new plants in lockdown so a bit puzzled. Also the chervil is in a trough with other soft herbs and there’s not so much as a nibble out of them. No aphids in that trough. Not much I can do really except keep an eye on it.

We've found starlings taking fronds of aromatic herbs back to their nests ... they seem to like our rosemary and take several sprigs most mornings. Have you got any starlings nesting around you?

No starlings, and I'd have thought they would have been less neat and would have taken others as well? There's a tangerine sage they might like if they are going for pot pourri
Possible theory is next door's puppy, who likes tasting plants, and as chervil is slightly anise it might appeal to the canine palate, but surely the owner would pull him off before he got the lot, and I wouldn't expect young Maurice to be that tidy

Warm weather followed by rain has obviously suited the Swiss chard .. steamed for supper tonight to go with the roast chicken ... Spanokopita might be on the menu before long
Re: gardening resources and tips, etc.
this was some of our sugar snaps yesterday - before i picked them for dinner. we had a meal from them a few days ago, too - must remember to sow another load.
we never seem to be able to let them swell to more than the size of the little emojis on here - we're looking forward to the next meal's worth.
