This thread made me realise that I had never seen Coffee Creamer in Cyprus, I have searched several supermarkets and cannot find it, not that I actually want it.
However I did find cans of Caramel Condensed Milk

We make the simplest salted caramel icecream ever with a can of caramel condensed milk, some sea salt and 300 ml whipped double cream ....

Put the caramel into a large bowl and stir to loosen slightly.
Add 300ml double cream and salt and whisk until the mixture is thick and just holding its shape.
Scoop into a 1 litre airtight container and freeze overnight.
Serve with a few flakes of sea salt sprinkled over.

Really? It’s in one of her books, with the addition of Bourbon. Has been a staple here for a very long time.

Those ice creams look lovely.

If I can get the ingredients next time we shop I shall.

Recipes get passed along

I don’t think it’s about “nicking” them, just using them until they become just your own way of doing things, especially with a recipe this simple

I tried the bourbon version and wasn’t mad about it

Really? It's almost my most favourite ice cream.

I presume condensed milk and cream is probably a very standard ice cream base. Wartime maybe? Although I have a posh ice cream maker (25 years service gift 23 years ago) I still lean towards the recipes that don't need one! Her coffee one is another staple here.

I remember that practically the first thing I learnt about Nigella is that she has a collection of over 3,000 recipe books, so it's hardly surprising if her recipes can be traced back to a common ancestor! I thought I was vaguely obsessive, and I've only got 350 recipe books.

Stop it PP! My figure doesn't need these - but the ingredients are on my next shopping list .

Gosh, you'd need a full-time librarian!

I wonder if they're stacked like that cleaner did in that library, in size order instead of subject...

That would make sense, PP. Were they able to get cream during the war? Was it available during rationing? I have absolutely no idea  .

I've never made the coffee one but I believe you can make a vanilla one with ordinary condensed milk and some vanilla essence. The friend I got the recipe from says that she always serves it with h-m honeycomb crisp stuff. I've never tired that although apparently it is actually reasonably simple to make.

I’m not 100% sure about this but I suspect that during rationing cream might have been easier to get hold of than eggs to make custard?

Connie onnie I think was on points during the war, so restricted availability but around.

I wonder if the recipe possibly was one invented to make use of the ice compartment in early fridges like the Kelvinator that took up half our kitchen throughout the 50s?

I’m pretty sure that cream making was illegal during the war and for a fair time afterwards. In fact I have a vague memory of the excitement when it reappeared so that would be on the 1950s.
I’ve been making a Rose Elliott ice cream with cream and condensed milk for over 30 years so I don’t know if this pre dates Nigella .

Do you think ice cream is illegal during lockdown??? All this 'cool' chat has made me ice cream hungry so on finding 2 tins of condensed milk I will 'caramelise' them in the pressure cooker tomorrow when the sun is out and then buy me some double cream and make this delicious concoction. Think it maybe a coffee mix as it is my fave, may add a splash of brandy - for softness of course !!!!

Did you say illegal or obligatory? I think the latter, to keep spirits up. I polished off a box of Lidl imitation Magnums this week...

The posh gelato shop round the corner has reopened for takeaways, with suitable distancing

I did look at the queue on Saturday and wonder how the ice cream cone + face mask combo was going to work
