Masterchef is upon us

Postby Gillthepainter » Thu Apr 09, 2020 8:18 am

I've been saying the very same thing. He has stood out from the start.

I'm a little disappointed with the standard this year. Rugby fella still not seasoning. Can't believe that the 61yr old is still in the competition, although I like her. Nor Claire, who keeps making rather big mistakes with rather simple offerings.

My guess is the rugby chap doesn't consume much salt.

Crossed my mind too, especially as we're constantly being told to watch our salt intake.

There has been some fab cooking, but I do feel a couple of those semifinalists are in by the skin of their teeth, and also that few have fallen by the wayside who had promise.

I record them before watching so I can fast forward through the bits where they're not being judged.

I notice that John Torode is complaining this year about things being over-seasoned - totally unheard of before. Maybe he has himself cut down on salt lately.

The standard re ideas is amazing and even presentation but silly execution errors seem to have run rife during the series. I think judging now rests on the dish presented on that day, so might as well flip a coin.

I still don't get the meat judging though. Someone was panned for undercooked veal served to the three guest chef diners, yet another was later applauded for beef cooked "perfectly" that was almost dripping with blood. What's the difference? Meat eaters are weird ;)

Oh good, can I ask what is meant by 'seasoning'? Is it salt? and if so isn't that individual? All the Michelin and telly chefs seem to put loads of salt on everything.

Have you noticed Rick Stein, whenever he adds salt to his dishes, always says something about the salt police

Am I the only one who seems to have lost overall interest in masterchef. MCUS I thought used to be pretty good. The season with the blind contestant was interesting. Thought she did good. Caught a few clips on you tube. MCUS junior does nothing for me

Some other tidbits. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wLvmql-9_W8

MCUK. Can't speak on it as I don't watch it, not even any clips on you tube.

MCAUS and MCCANADA I would watch if there was a master class. Have seen some great ones with hestie and nigella and one or two others via clips on you tube.

Produced drama but if I can come away with a good idea or two, I won't complain about that

I lost interest a while back, but now that I've got used to Torode and Pasty I enjoy it again.

Still makes me squirm when Torode says "Sprunions" instead of "Spring onions". He did it twice yesterday, but someone must have picked it up on it, as twice he said "Sprinions" instead of "Sprunions".

It's still on my Tivo, I'll see if I can YouTube it.

I also find the way they shovel the food into their mouths offputting.

HAAA! Loving closeup on the telly, and they said that the blue consomme looked like disinfectant!

I would have sent the girl who made the blue stuff home.

Me too.
There is a reason why plasters are blue in catering establishments.

Hee hee. The blue soup reminded me of the first Bridget Jones film and I looked at   the artistic brown thing.

I have a dog. :?

I have no idea why I thought of the dog.

"Sprungions" perhaps?

Some of the smears on a plate look like you've skidded in something nasty on the pavement.

I'll be catching up this morning whilst getting ready on last evening's episode. Can't wait to see the blue stuff.

I cannot get on with splodges or smears. What is the use of being told that there is Black Garlic sauce if there is not enough there to taste it.
The blue consommé was definitely a mistake

And a waste of Kobe (?) beef...

And the handmade rice noodles idea also fell flat, as rolled up like that they became little rice cakes, which doesn't really sound very nice alongside the beef, as proper noodles might. Rice cakes in blue chicken stock with a sliver of astronomically expensive beef. Yee ha.

I'm a fan and quite like Greg and John's quirks. I found Beverly, although definitely a good cook a bit smug at times for my liking.
I'm not sure who'll win this year though think the guys are definitely stronger than the girls.
