Re: Breakfast treat
Brilliant, thanks for that.
I always appreciate a new way to treat eggs.

Re: Breakfast treat
Writing about grated food has reminded me of a history website I use; it has few members but they are international and know their stuff.
The talk on the thread was about ancient recipes and a Dutch/Belgian contributor kept on about 'raped cheese'.
When you know that the French word for grated is 'râpé' you can understand the confusion.

Re: Breakfast treat
A lovely Jewish friend of mine, from way back so, taught me to make poato latkes. I would never have thought to make them for breakfats . Mostly because it would just be too much food at that time of day

Re: Breakfast treat
It would be too much at 7-8am but as a weekend 'brunch' it worked for me. I wondered as I was making my latkes if that's where the idea for hash browns came from.
Re: Breakfast treat
Good grief, no wonder they didn't stock that Little Scarlet at Tesco, it's £8.50 a jar!!!!!

I'll stick with latkes...

Re: Breakfast treat
That seems extortionate
I’ll look next time I’m in John Lewis or Selfridges Food Hall or similar
Going back to latkes, I always assumed that hash browns were related to rosti as neither has the batter that holds a latke together, but that’s only a guess

Re: Breakfast treat
Little Scarlet is the very best jam according to Tiptree.
The strawberries are particularly small and juicy. I have bought jars in the past, but I don't recall spending that amount of money (£3.50 was tops for me when I bought a raspberry and gin jam at Blenheim Palace a couple of years ago).

Re: Breakfast treat
Jam and gin are two separate entities for me ! I have been known to add various spirits to marmalade but never to jam. Basil does go in strawberry jam.

Re: Breakfast treat
The jam is £3.95 in Morrisons.
The jam doesn't have gin added - it's a gin liqueur https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wilkins-Sons-T ... 2422025031

Re: Breakfast treat
I have had the Little Scarlet jam in the past when it was more expensive than the ordinary jam but not ridiculously so
A bit wasted on me perhaps as I am not fond of cooked strawberries, though I don’t mind jam occasionally and it was nice iirc
Not fond of booze in jam or marmalade either, always tastes slightly of rotten fruit to me, I vaguely remember staying in in a pretentious B&B where only the honey was unadulterated - don’t know if they discouraged children

Re: Breakfast treat
May add that to the list on my next Morrisons' trip, although I've already exceeded my sugariness allowance with the blackcurrant jam I bought a couple of days ago when I couldn't find the Tiptree....
It also sparked a memory of the first time I tried Hartleys Pineapple Jam as a kid, and thought it was the most exotic thing on the planet. I see they still do it!
I have to add that was probably around the time that my favourite biscuits were Lemon Puffs. I guess I must have had an exceptionally sweet tooth as a kidn.

Re: Breakfast treat
Someone gave me a jar of gin jam at Christmas.
Didn't like it much on toast or scones but it was good in a victoria sponge.

Re: Breakfast treat
One of the few decent jams you can find here is La Vieja Fábrica.
But I had no idea that Tiptree had gone viral with their jams!
A breakfast treat for me is a toasted baguette, slathered with dill-infused cream cheese, topped with smoked salmon and capers.
And a glass of Prosecco!

Re: Breakfast treat
I like La Vieja Fabrica - I sometimes buy the marmalade, there’s something pleasing about having a Seville orange marmalade actually made in Seville!
