We stick metal skewers through them after rubbing with butter paper and sea salt. Bake in the oven for an hour of so depending on size. Cut an X in the top and squeeze gently ... mash in a generous amount of unsalted butter, freshly ground black pepper and a sprinkling of sea salt crystals ... heavenly... we have them
probably once a week with sausages and beans, pork chops and sweet corn, cold roast chicken and salad ... that sort of thing ... yum

Yes, that does sound the very best way Suffs! What variety of potatoes do you use?

It´s really tough to find the "right" potato for baking here. Firstly, because they all seem to be growing rather small, and secondly, there´s only really a choice between "white" and "Yellow" potatoes.
Damn!!

I do enjoy a baked potato for lunch , I hate it when they’ve obviously been reheated from a previous day and the flesh has yellowed and turned sweet , same with chips that are ‘twice fried’ too many hours apart - too sweet.

The frozen version of jacket potatoes can usually be found in my freezer , the skins are softer which I prefer as easier to chew

Yes, I've started using the frozen jacket potatoes more often. I microwave them for the usual 5 minutes, let them cool slightly, then cut into thick slices, spray with Fry Light, sprinkle with herbs and grill. I have a halogen oven so use that at the top. I can see what is happening with the halogen oven. They are nice and crispy with a good flavour and a low-fat method.

I tried the McCann's frozen ones but the potato tasted funny to me. As a baked spud itself, they were very good. I wonder if that's why you sprinkle with herbs Renée, or maybe you've switched to another brand?

They’re not as good as fresh but for a work lunch a good second , I tend to have mine with beans and a sprinkling of extra mature cheddar at work - easy microwave meal which helps as our works canteen is about half a mile away

Jeral, the only flavour that I noticed with the McCains, was the slow-baked flavour and it as just an accompaniment to other foods. I bought Sainsbury's frozen jacket potatoes the other day but I haven't tried them yet.

I can see that they are very useful for a work lunch, Otterspocket!

I've never seen frozen baked pots before.
That might make things easier for me. Not that baking 4 potatoes is difficult you understand.

But nevertheless. A quicker lunch is rather lovely luxury.

I've tried frozen baked potatoes (in fact, I did an "in-home" test on them while they were being developed) but really don't like them. I much prefer traditional oven-baked ones or if time is a factor, I do them in my combi mictowave/oven.

I don't always want the oven on for an hour just for one baked potato and certainly not in hot weather, so I find them handy for occasional use.

Here they are Gill:

202 calories per potato. That's not bad, Renee!

They are currently a staple of Slimming World so long as you don’t add butter. :o Fine with beans or tuna and yogurt though.

Good idea with the tuna and yoghurt Pepper Pig. I'm getting a bit fussy about the tuna that I buy. At one time I bought the three cans for a special price, but now go for the albacore tuna in a jar, which does last for two days, so not too expensive.

Perhaps I should get the jarred tuna from now on, Renee.

It's little tips like this I really appreciate here.
I do know jars exist ;) but it simply doesn't occur to me to buy the tuna this way.

I would have thought that the calorie count would be the same for both frozen and freshly cooked baked potatoes. I find it amusing but also annoying that companies like Weight Watchers and Slimming World seem to try to give the impression that if you eat foods that are on their diet plans, they somehow magically have a lower calorie count than normal.

The reasons the frozen ones are quite low in calories are because
1. They aren’t huge
2. I guess they cook them to lose less water vapour, so ones slow cooked would be marginally more concentrated?
