Joan, it was only half a kilo, the actual mussels were quite small but the sauce was divine - OH finished it.
Didn't eat all the potatoes with the duck, but such was the quality of the cooking neither of us felt stuffed when we left.

Fabulous lunch here yesterday https://www.whitehorsebrancaster.co.uk/
The sun was shining, the tide was out and the view from our table across the mud flats was stunning ... little boats bobbing in the creeks, loads of gulls, waders and a couple of egrets feeding in the mud and a pair of red kites wheeling in the sky above us, their red feathers glowing in the sun.
OH had the Whipped Goats Cheese with pear which he announced was wonderful and I had the roasted scallops with parsnip fried, pureed and pickled ... to die for.
He then had baked ray wing with grapes and an almond butter sauce, minted new potatoes and buttered purple sprouting broccoli and chiffonade kale. I chose the roast hake with sautéed potatoes, mussels, wild leeks and a butter sauce and broccoli and kale as before. Both were absolutely wonderful. Really really good. Highly recommended Service was spot on too.
We finished with very good macchiato before driving along the coast to Cromer for a teatime ice cream on the pier ..... a great (if slightly delayed) birthday celebration ... we decided not to go at the end of January when my birthday occurred because we knew that once the weather improved the views would be fantastic

We were exactly there at the beginning of April last year Suffs - wonderful views - I was, & still am stunned by the incredible skies over that way, whether mean & brooding or vibrant sunsets, just wonderful!
It sounds like you had a perfect ( delayed) birthday & meal !

When I find out Clive I'll let you know!
I don't think i'll get past Ris de Veau cooked in hay. It's his signature dish and to die for.
Thanks Member 461 - we will!

Re: The restaurants I've been to!
Are you ready Clive??
They are pea sprouts !!! You would be very pleased to know that almost all the French diners asked the question too
The whole meal was fabulous. We chose snail raviolli, the guinea fowl - of course and the Paris Brest. Letitia offered us a glass of Champagne and we had a bottle of white St Joseph with the food. It is so lovely to be there again after nearly 10 weeks of closure.

Hahaha! Pea sprouts!
Well, I suppose they do look a little crazy, since they grow in all directions at once.
So pleased you had an excellent dinner, Joan!

Re: The restaurants I've been to!
Nice to hear you ate so beautifully Joan and Suffness.
We've just got back from Rouen, firstly.
Sue, we ate at your place, Les Maraiches, in the market square, thank you so much for the mention at the beginning of the restaurant thread.
This isn't you on the Valentine's menu carte is it?
Bistro-style, packed, friendly, quaint, and characterful.
An offering of chunky tapenade:
Terrine of the house & "tian" of tomato and goats cheese:
Steak and pepper sauce:
Duck:

Re: The restaurants I've been to!
And on Friday lunch, we ate with Elisa and her husband at Coretta's near her house. Coretta is Martin Luther King's wife - next to the memorial gardens.
Spring like temperatures for us.
charcouterie to share entre nous
invite of the house, st jacques and limes
catch of the day for me tuna, black beans, foam, carrots
lamb for Elisa and her OH
beef cheek for Tony (he loves a french stew)
coffees and pistache biscuits to close
Lovely place.

Re: The restaurants I've been to!
We did, Petronius.
To be honest, we are relaxed about what we eat when we go away. Sometimes high end, and sometimes not.
One night, we had an American bistro tex mex meal, that was round the corner of our Versailles hotel. Surprisingly hot chilli con carne, considering we were in France.
I mistakenly thought our glamorous hotel had a Valentine's menu called "love can", from their poster.
But on enquiring at reception, it was a love can that a couple could take to their room and enjoy together.
Chocolates?
Non, a love can was the reply.
Seemed a bit sordid and odd to me. I wished I hadn't asked.

Great looking food Gill. How good you met up with the Belgian Endive. I hope Elisa is well.

Yes, Tony's newest favourite thing too now.
And yes, she is doing very well indeed, save the usual niggles we all have.
