Re: Pie and peas in Leeds
Smitch, I used to go to the Whit Friday Brass Band contests when my son played with Rochdale Band and then Besses 'o the Barn band. We used to park the car in Dobcross. I have such happy memories!
There is, of course, the famous Wigan pie butty! A pie in a muffin, I believe, but I've never had that experience!

We are having mince and tattie pie tonight - NE style made on a plate with shortcrust pastry top and bottom. M's requestwhen there was some cooked mince left over after the mince and dumplings last night. All welcome - supper at 7.00 !

Renee, I don't live far from Dobcross, although I don't go there on Whit Friday as so many roads are closed. I love the Whit Friday tradition and the band contest, I'd never heard of it until I met my OH and moved to the area. Sadly I had to miss it this year due to awful weather and even worse trains.

I haven't been for a long time Smitch, having moved away from the area. My favourite moment was when the Black Dyke Mills band came marching down the hill. What a wonderful sound.

The Black Dyke Mills band rings a bell. Were they featured on an Alan Titchmarsh garden makeover? They're probably famous for all sorts of thing though.
Just thinking out loud is all.

Brassed Off is one of my all time favourite films!

Yes, that involved the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, who played the soundtrack for the film. My son's friend conducted the band at one time.

I got that wrong. He was Musical Director of the band. He has certainly changed!

Re: Pie and peas in Leeds
They filmed some of Brassed Off in Delph, Saddleworth- the Whit Friday scene I think.
Re: Pie and peas in Leeds
Yes, I read that Smitch. We always gave Delph a miss because the pubs are open from very early in the morning and there are some very drunken youths who used to throw stones at the band.
Re: Pie and peas in Leeds
As far as I know, Delph is fine now. Most of the trouble is in Uppermill. More pubs than all the other villages and the place non-locals go to. My local contest isn’t great, so Uppermill would be closest to us, but I always give it a miss.

Amazing, but wonderful that we got from pie and peas to brass bands.

It must be said that the lad in the pie video looks a lot like someone who’d go to brass band festival. Maybe even take his mum.
