Sue - your fridge makes mine look positively chaotic!!
Well, the weather is all over the place isn't it - one minute I'm making a definite autumn meal - the next I'm back to summer(ish)
The plums have been an absolute joy this year tho' - got thro' tons of them with The Lushly's picking - thinking of making a plum & almond cake soon...…..

Mmm, I seem to have started a cheesecake trend on here ! All the elements of my one are now made, I just need to put the fruit topping onto the orange filling once it's set . I'll also be making a raspberry cheesecake once the other one is nearly finished. We have 1 and a half tubs of frozen raspberries to use up before we get our new freezer delivered on Monday next week. I've only had the recipe for about 25 years in one of my Mary Berry books, and I've never made it as that, although I have used it as a basis for other fruits.

I've made it with cashew nuts and it was fine. Pine nuts are very expensive here and I'm not that keen on them, but we always have cashews and almonds in the pantry

I'm not so keen on pine nuts anymore - I found an unopened packet at the back of the cupboard a few years ago - totally rancid when I opened them - it's put me off ever since.
Should have sensibly kept them in the freezer - do all nuts freeze well?

Re: Hello Autumn.........!
My kitchen is very warm and I keep raw shelled nuts and sesame seeds in the freezer. I have a little box that contains ground almonds, flakes almonds, raw cashews and two kinds of sesame seeds. Must get some walnuts
They keep perfectly for ages in an airtight wrapping or a plastic box
You have to be careful with pine nuts, if the price is too good to be true then they are sometimes Chinese pines of a different variety which aren’t so nice and may even contain a variety that can be quite unpleasant. I think I had those once

As we need to get our old freezer outside and defrosted before it gets collected by the delivery men who are getting the new one to us, we need to empty the freezer today. Therefore I will probably make either jam or the beginnings of a raspberry lemonade with our frozen berries.

I saw cobnuts at our food festival today.
Quite a small bag for £5. Isn' t that a bit too expensive?
What do you all do with them please?

Well apart from in salads or patisserie, just munch them
Which is why I didn't buy any, I munch too much!

Thanks Sue.
The only recipe I have for them is a veggie side dish, more like a dumpling. With seeds.
I cannot say I've ever seen anything else.
Waitrose always has them, I'll be interested to see how much they charge when I get some for my snacking.

I grow cobnuts and occasionally manage to pick some before the squirrels get their paws on them.
I've made a meringue with finely ground cobnuts which was very tasty - quite chewy though.

Pesky squirrels.
That's a good plan. Adding them like you would ground almonds.
I've got loads of recipes that use those.

I've never tried grinding a squirrel. Probably best to make sure the lid's firmly on the blender.
I tried a couple of cob nuts when last mentioned on here, scrounged from green grocer as not knowing what to expect. They seemed something of a nonentity to me. Perhaps revisiting them is in order if now in season.

Re: Hello Autumn.........!
They are really just big hazel nuts - and like hazel nuts are IMO best if lightly toasted to bring out the flavour and crunch. Neither has a lot of flavour if underripe but their appearance is just one of the flags that tells you autumn is coming, especially if you can forage for them
I bought s six pack of Cripps Red early apples from Iceland of all unlikely places. Very good and a good price, they had good English apples last year too

Re: Hello Autumn.........!
Indian Summer ( Early September ) ..
Our climate is still quite warm even though we are having an early grape harvest this year ..
It does not really get very chilly and / or cold here until November ..
Boletus Mushrooms ( Mid October ) .. Still too warm ..
However, we have some lovely Milk Sap Mushrooms called Niscalos in Spanish, a vivid rusty burnt orange medium size wild mushroom also called Rovellos in Catalan .. They grow in the foothills of the Pyrénees of Lleida, north west of both Barcelona and Girona ..
Freshly hunted wild feathered game is coming onto the scene ( quail, partridge, pheasant and guinea fowl ) ..
Have a nice day / evening ..

Re: Hello Autumn.........!
No such thing as Autumn here. It´s either the rainy season or the dry season.
Mangoes are disappearing, though.
