Re: Bargain Basement
Tinned tomatoes.
I've been finding Sainsbury h/brand, Waitrose and Tescos tinned tomatoes rather watery.
But just opened a tin of Asda tomatoes, and they are thick with juice and tomatoes.
I can recommend them.

Re: Bargain Basement
Gill, that's really good to know as I usually do an Asda online shop Thanks!
I've been getting the Napolina or Cirio chopped tomatoes when they've been on offer - used to be 4 for £2.00, although I daresay that's gone up now. I haven't bought any for a while as I had quite a stash.

Re tinned tomatoes - hope it’s not behind a paywall.

I use those Sainsbury & Tesco ‘brands’ - the batch printing looks similar so might well come from the same factory. They seem perfectly adequate.

Amazingly it wasn't. Interesting, thanks.

Interesting but it’s unfortunate that Xanthe didn’t include any of the supermarket main own label ones which are what I tend to buy, or Cook Italian which seem to me pretty good and used to be regularly on offer in 4 packs
I agree with her on KTC, cheap but not cheerful. Food Twitter is obsessed with the Mutti brand, I have a can but haven’t opened it yet

You should, they are excellent, even better than Cirio, I am waiting for the next discount offer but will buy full price if necessary.

Re: Bargain Basement
I just haven’t needed a full size can of tomatoes since I got the Mutti
I opened a jar of their tomato and peperoncini sauce the other day, very chilli so not suitable for what I wanted at the time, will cook meatballs in it tonight, think it will be good

Re: Bargain Basement
I agree with the Mutti.
But they're too expensive for me. My preferred is the Cherry Tomatoes.
My least favourite is pasatta in a carton - it used to be nice, so I don't know what's changed (maybe me).
I used to always buy whole plum tomatoes, and whizz them up. But can't be bothered these day, and just get the chopped variety.
And always the cheapest on the shelves, which is why I was so pleased with the Asda ones.
I hope it's not a one off.

They weren't in my local Waitrose yesterday, I'll probably go again tomorrow. They began doing the special offers/discounts last year, do we have Tomato Wars?
Re: Bargain Basement
Well I needed to put some miles on my motorbike, I think I'll pop up to Snalbans via Asda and I've already got Lidl tomatoes in watery stuff in the cupboard....
Test forthcoming.

No way.
Well, I like Waitrose, but it's super taking the mickey these days. I think twice or three times before I go.
Which is not very often now.
Re: Bargain Basement
It's not as appealing as it used to be, especially when you're on a limited budget!
I was thinking of asking for suggestions as to what else I should pick up while I'm there...

Really? I find it good value.
Re: Bargain Basement
I just remembered something! Their cheapo choccy biccies are fab! I used to get them on my way to hospital in Stevenage when I had problems with my ears a couple of years back...

Re: Bargain Basement
Splutter.
The Waitrose tommies are £1.25 when you click on the link, Sakkers. So something doesn't align.
I used to buy my toiletries there, but they out-price Boots now.
Our Cirencester store is quite quiet these days.

Re: Bargain Basement
They're still 25p on my computer! It says St Albans branch specifically, looks like a Google-generated ad....
When I got there, they were on the shelf at £1.25. Unfortunately the St Albans Waitrose is in an odd location, and there was no bloody signal, so I couldn't call up the webpage, but I collared an assistant and said, "These are marked as 25p online, do you honour website prices?", and he said, "No the price is what's in the shelf...".
As I'd travelled such a long way, I thought I'd get them anyway, and they also had the Cirio ones half price (i.e. double the Lidl price at half price. Bum, got peeled not chopped...).
However at the till, there was an important-looking woman ushering staff around, so I thought I'd have another moan. She was able to call the Waitrose website up, £1.25. Glum. She then said there was a non-Waitrose site that sometimes misled people, and she called it up, and there they were at 25p. So I bit the bullet and went to the till. However on the way, she called out "Go through the till at the end, and he'll mark them as free, as you've come such a long way...". It pays to moan politely!
Anyway, those Waitrose choccy biccies are as fab as I remember.*
Can't be bothered to do the test today, I'll leave it for a rainy day.
* They taste like McVities USED to taste.

Re: Bargain Basement
Asda toms that I've got are the red tin at the front of your pic.
I've just made a pasta sauce, and they are still thickly pleasing when opened and used, so not a one off wonder.
Well done on the polite insistence result.
I've seen some painful rude behaviour in Waitrose that would rival a toddler tantrum.
