Re: Bargain Basement
Popped in to Tesco (in Pinner) and found that the Philadelphia 180g pots were on offer at £1 each (with a Tesco Clubcard) whereas the big 340g pots were still at the full price of £3.
Re: Bargain Basement
Yes, I noticed the other day that the smaller pots were a better buy than the large ones in Asda. I took advantage!

Re: Bargain Basement
On driving back from Gatters on Wed. evening we had to stop for bread at the Co-op in Ludgershall and picked up a roasted chicken for £2 so that will be supper tonight. Might even treat us to some of the smaller pink fir apples and some sort of veg.
I have a hankering for coronation chicken so will pick the meat off the wings but will wait for my mouth ulcers to heal before eating.

Re: Bargain Basement
Aldi has frozen mixed cooked seafood, £2.99 for 350g.
I tried it last night, served with savoury rice as a paella-type thing.
It contained mussels, good sized prawns and squid rings.
Really tasty, we enjoyed it.

Re: Bargain Basement
This isn’t a bargain, I’m sorry to say, it’s just annoying.
Primula tube cheese, which is thought of as a small but forgivable sin in this house, has gone up to £1.65 in Morrisons and £1.55 in Sainsburys, but the weight has gone down from 150gms to 140gms. So rather less weight for rather more money.

Re: Bargain Basement
Wic, I have noticed practically everything going up and up - I do a regular Asda online shop and there is steady price creep - well, tbh, not always "creep", more like "gallop"! How much did your cheese spread cost previously, for a larger tube?
Re: Bargain Basement
It was £1.50 before. Both Sainsburys and Morrisons do it on offer for £1 sometimes, so that is when we buy it.
You are right about the price gallop, things are going up by about 5p every week here. I dare say it’s Brexit/Covid/whatever for some items, but, being suspicious and curmudgeonly I think most of it is bandwaggoning.

Re: Bargain Basement
KTC ginger paste, garlic paste and ginger & garlic paste went from £1 to £1.10 and a couple of weeks later £1.35.
That does look like a good buy KC2.

Re: Bargain Basement
If there’s anyone out there like my husband, who likes Ryvita, it’s in Sainsburys at £1.35 a packet at the moment, but the Aldi version, which is apparently almost exactly the same, is 59p.

Re: Bargain Basement
That is a good saving Wic
I prefer the round Finn Crisp, Ikea used to do it as a cheaper own brand, but I’m not sure they still do

Re: Bargain Basement
Ryvita is on offer at Asda atm; the Lidl version is also excellent and I think more or less the same price as the Aldi one, Wic.

Re: Bargain Basement
Two current offers
Sainsbury Tanqueray gin, £20 per litre
Morrisons, Lavazza Rosso coffee beans, £12 per kg instead of £15, which is itself pretty good
Edited to add Morrisons Woky apples, 69p for 6, a really nice variety called Scifresh, solid and crisp, good flavour with a touch of tartness, apparently it's a cultivar of Jazz, but it's nicer than any Jazz I have had

I don't remember a Dutch/Belgian week at Lidl before https://www.lidl.co.uk/c/flavour-of-the ... ian/c2291/
I could definitely go for some of the treats!

Re: Bargain Basement
Not, unfortunately, a heads up for something in the bargain basement, rather the opposite - we've been getting long red peppers from the local veg shop for months, always £2.99 a kg.
Yesterday they were £4.99 a kg, and the other shop that sells them on King Street used to charge £2.49 and now charges £4.49 ... I'm sure they get them from the same supplier, as with all their fresh herbs etc (typical M.Eastern shop produce), hence the same leap in price.
I've also noticed on the weekly Asda online shop that the prices of some things are "creeping" up but others, such as butter, have leapt up .... I know we all know it's happening, and the reasons why etc etc, but you really do feel huge sympathy for large families on a tight budget.
Sorry, I'll try and find something a bit more cheerful next post

Re: Bargain Basement
one of the problems is that we have got used to 'cheap' food.
since the 1950s the proportion of income spent on food has halved - from about a 33% to 15%.
(though some of that has been taken up by the rise in housing cost).

I went to the butcher’s shop yesterday for the second time in 2 years - I couldn’t believe how much prices had gone up in that time
