Cake mixes?

Postby slimpersoninside » Sun Feb 21, 2021 2:58 pm

For reasons I won't go into I will not have full access to the contents of my baking ingredients cupboard at times this year but still want to be able to put cakes in the tin.
Can anyone recommend any good quality mixes please?

Thanks.

My mum always used to swear by Betty Crocker. Can you still get them?

I think most supermarkets have their own versions of cake mix - victoria sponge, chocolate brownies, etc. You don't have to buy branded.

I bought a Betty Crocker mix at Xmas. Not made it up yet. It must make a lot as it needs 4 eggs added.

Ones I've made from packets (all the same to me) tend to have a slightly grainy texture rather than be light sponge, so I buy them for fruit or syrup under and custard on top as pudding rather than as cake. I buy non-butter ones though, so butter ones might be very different.

I agree Betty Crocker is supposed to be the best . Their frosting isn’t bad

My mum used to make Betty Crocker spice cake, and I used to use the chocolate fudge frosting
My homemade frosting my have tasted slightly better, but hers won hands down on texture, speed, and cost

Betty Crocker it is then.

We have an on-line shop in a week or so, think I'll give one a try out. I fancy the Devils Food Cake with Coffee Frosting in the hope of getting a sort of mocha cake.

Thank you folks!

Betty Crocker? Don't do it.

There are a growing number of additive free baking mixes with less/none heavy industrial ingredients and additives.

SIL only ever makes box cakes. The red velvet chocolate cake mix is very tasty btw.

Can you point me in their direction please?

I'm open to other suggestions.

Here in the States, mum used either betty crocker or duncan Hines. As I recall she had good results with both.

I've noticed that online there's something called Superfood Bakery which claims to be organic. Seems to be all banana bread & Brownies but there's a lemon & poppy seed cake right at the end.

https://superfoodbakery.co.uk/

Yumbles seem to offer a few too. I usually trust them.

I expect you've seen them and was just hoping for recommendations - but anyway!

Thank you EM.

They look far too healthy to make it over the threshold here  :D .

Family thinking is cakes are a treat and as such should be a little "naughty but nice".

Dr Oetker do a number of fairly basic cakes, mainly traybakes which don't seem to contain any scary ingredients and their stuff usually does what it say on the package, though I haven't tried any

https://www.oetker.co.uk/uk-en/our-prod ... Cake%20Mix

I looked at the Betty Crocker UK website, they contain more ingredients listed under their detailed chemical names, though none that look really scary, and in fact are much the same

https://www.bettycrocker.co.uk/products ... t-cake-mix

Intrigued that both red velvet cakes still use Carmine, so not vegetarian, and I'd have thought that an expensive ingredient, but it's probably there as they are no longer permitted to use Ponceau red, on either side of the Atlantic

Don't forget frosting or filling is usually another package to buy, check the label

Thanks for the sciency bit Sue :thumbsup.

I don't mind using packet mixes in this instance, it will be the exception to the usual make from scratch so think we can take it :D .

My thoughts too! I'd go for Betty Crocker (if they don't want you to add everything but the flour!).

If you can't bake from scratch, wouldn't it be easier to just buy cake?

My daughter loves the Betty Crocker cream cheese frosting.
When she lived here I used to buy the extra special type supermarket cookies and sandwich them together with the frosting.

We bought some Betty Crocker in Mexico last year. I think it was white chocolate and macadamia, or something like that.
Didn´t last long, whatever it was. :gonzo
