Camp coffee?.....

Postby slimpersoninside » Sat Feb 13, 2021 5:50 pm

Any good to make coffee cake?

As I only drink espresso based coffee and use beans I don't keep instant in the house as it tends to go to waste. I do however love a coffee sponge every now and then and was thinking about using Camp. It's something I may have done in the past but can't remember  .

Any help gratefully received thanks.

It's what my mother always used! But 50+ years ago, I'd never tasted any other type of coffee, so I don't know how it would stand up in a direct comparison these days.

my great aunt always used it - to make coffee.
she also used it to flavour coffee cakes, which were always lovely.
if i need a coffee flavouring i always make up a really strong espresso and use that as i, too, don't have any instant in the house - and i always forget to buy some camp.

I bought some last year to make a coffee and walnut cake for a special occasion. It worked well, in the way that I remembered, for both cake and icing. I've still got most of the bottle left though!

I'm sure I've read a thread somewhere saying that Camp was in fact superior for coffee cakes by general consensus. There's a recipe here from the Camp coffee club and I suppose they of all people ought to know a good recipe ;)

It's a surprise that it's still available. I thought it had long gone, along with Caramac, Fry's Five Boys, Stardrops, Victory V lozenges and Rileys Chocolate Toffee Rolls.

They lived in vending machines on railway stations, one of the few things my mum would hand over cash for

You can still get Stardrops too - I use it in my kitchen! https://www.starbrandsltd.co.uk/pages/stardrops

I think Camp coffee is sold in a plastic bottle now, which takes away some of the nostalgia! :D

You could buy coffee extract from the baking section, rather than any type of coffee which might not keep well.

Concentrated Japanese-style iced coffee using a small fraction of water to coffee. Best, purest coffee flavour I've come across. 40g ground coffee, 60g boiling water, 60g ice. Freeze unused coffee or add 50% sugar by weight, dissolve, and fridge.

Or make some coffee extract/essence the same way as making vanilla essence - put favourite espresso, coarsely ground, in a jar or bottle and add twice the coffee volume with desired alcohol. Leave for a week or two before using.

The only camp coffee I drink these days is cooked over an open fire somewhere in the jungle. With freshly ground coffee beans
But to answer your question, slim, instead of being flippant - give it a go! Why not?

Camp coffee is great in homemade Bailey’s. Last time I made some was years ago and I finished the rest of the bottle as coffee and quite enjoyed it but there again I’m not really a coffee drinker, one cup of Kenko dark roast instant in the morning is normally my limit.

Cheers

Mrs B sometimes make mocha muffins using Camp. It works pretty well.

Thank you very much :thumbsup .

I shall give it a go. It's not exactly going to break the bank if it's not all that good.

I use Camp coffee in cakes and muffins and I agree that it works better than proper coffee. It works for coffee ice cream and coffee meringues too. :thumbsup
