Re: Foodies In The News
I rember my friend’s son about 10 years ago being upset because he had got cards for girls he liked at school, but the other boys (or their mums) bought gifts and he looked cheap
It didn’t spoil his chances for long - he looks like Nicolas Houston, but more athletic!. They were 14/15 years old, and I think that when I decided it had got out of hand

On the subject of Valentine's Day, there are some more sweet treat ideas here. My attention was caught by the cupcakes with hearts inside (No. 8). The video is a bit long as it shows the whole method but basically it is pink pre-made sponge hearts tucked into cupcakes and baked. The only thing is, for the full effect you'd need to cut it in half neatly before eating rather than biting or attacking with a fork!

I must buy a celeriac this week and try to like it. Those ingredients would disguise it quite well.
I've never noticed brown rice syrup anywhere. Is it just I haven't looked or is it a speciality ingredient in provincial parts?

Looks interesting.
Brown rice syrup is another first for me. Never heard of it.

I do think there are rather a lot of these things that are "not really sugar if it has a name that belongs in a whole food store" cropping up.. Some of course add a good flavour, of their own as date syrup does, but a lot of them don't

Re: Foodies In The News
Haven't been out on Valentine's Day for years.
Overpriced food, kitchens under pressure, crowded restaurants, naff menus.
Urgh.
Some years ago I was away on business on 14 Feb.
It didn't register with J and he met his pal for a couple of pints then they went for a curry.
And wondered why the place was festooned with roses, and the table had red hearts scattered on it.
2 straight blokes being treated as though they were in a relationship.
They found it all a bit confusing.
Then they realised what day it was.

I used to work as a photographer for local press etc. I had to attend a private corporate dinner to take photos at the beginning and end. A table was booked for me in the carvery at the hotel where it was being held, known locally as quite a nice place to go. It was Valentines Day, every table was booked for couples and I had to dine alone. It was awful! .

EM.
Simon Hopkinson’s Roast Chicken and Other Stories gets the Jay Rayner treatment this week. I used to use this a lot back in the distant days when I cooked properly.

I still have a celeriac to use up and thought this looked like it might be interesting, but I have very few of those ingredients in my cupboard and like others have never heard of brown rice syrup. I do have pomegranate syrup though
I grated the other celeriac (I had already bought this when I then got on in my Oddbox ) and mixed it with an equal quantity of grated apple (had lots of those to use up too, courtesy of Oddbox ) and some grated onion, mixed the whole bowl full with some mayo, lemon juice and other flavourings and the result is delicious - I just hope I can finish it up before it goes off - it made a large bowl full

I always think it’s impossible to make a small bowl of slaw .
I agree with Sue all these sugar substitutes seem the fashion but I wonder sometimes how much healthier they are . It’s a bit like the superfood craze when everyone was buying kale and blueberries just because they were the in thing

How right you are, Amy. Coleslaw for one is like trying to make paella for one, or a Sunday roast for one.
Re: Foodies In The News
I had vaguely heard of brown rice syrup, but after reading about it, I won't be buying any!
"Arsenic Content. Arsenic is a toxic chemical often found in trace amounts in some foods, including rice and rice syrups.
The Bottom Line. No human studies exist on the health effects of brown rice syrup. However, its high GI, lack of nutrients, and risk of arsenic contamination are significant downsides."

Re: Foodies In The News
You certainly make it sound tempting .
I suspect that any of the sweet syrups would do.

I'm sure they would EM! We don't always realise what we're eating. After all, fruit pips etc. contain cyanide, but the occasional one won't hurt and they usually pass through whole.

No, they grow in your stomach if you swallow them just as swallowed chewing gum sticks your intestines together.
More myths from the past.

I watched this the other night. I used to loathe Hugh F-W - I have forgotten why, exactly - but stopped doing so over the years (probably because I don't watch much tv.) But this is reminding me a bit a to possibly why.

.. and I was on my way to bed. Now it's an hour later . I've been toying with the idea of getting this book but would prefer to flick through it first.
I agree, HFW can be annoying but generally I like him and usually agree with the things he says.
