Heated (frozen) fruits of the forest for me too, on top of sweetened jumbo oats.

Re: Porridge toppings
Cripes, I've just weighed the dry porridge I have every morning = 140g.
I use much less if I make it into a hot porridge, with water and a teeny pinch of salt.

Re: Porridge toppings
Are you sure Gill? I've just weighed that much out of interest and it is over half quite a large pudding basin full. It's easy to go over 40g but that does sound quite daunting even for someone as greedy as me!

Here is the measure I use .. I think it once contained a little desert ..
It holds about 30-35 gms of oats. To this I add 2 unsulphured apricots, 3 brazils, 2 walnuts, 8 almonds, a tblspn each of pumpkin and sunflower seeds, flax seeds, throw the lot in my nutribullet and blitz... this totals about 500 calories.

Re: Porridge toppings
I add about that much if I'm having a smoothie with oats in, Patsy.
Yip - definitely 140g, EM.
If I make hot porridge, I'd use 100g. Bearing in mind, I don't have lunch - just a handful of nuts with a cup of tea at about 2:30pm.
My breakfast does keep me going until 6pm effectively.

that's what i use to measure washing powder for the machine - about ⅔ - ¾ full.
i definitely use more than that on the occasions i make porridge.

Wow, I wish my breakfast kept me going that long .. I need to break the cycle I am in of eating every 4 hours
Re: Porridge toppings
Fond memories of my mum helping me grate apple into oats and water to leave overnight for my breakfast.
For decades my homemade muesli contained oats, dried fruit and seeds with water added for breakfast. In winter that becomes porridge. Then add whatever soft fresh fruit we have or apple compote or dried fruit soaked overnight and heated.

Re: Porridge toppings
I have a particular small wine glass ( not the same one I use to measure rice) which I fill with oats for 2 of us.
Then 1 glass of milk and 1.5 of water.
If I remember I will weigh the oats and report back.
65g of oats for 2 people.

Re: Porridge toppings
Porridge is a winter brekkie for him, using the last of the boiling water from making tea around 7.30 with a few rolled oats and left in a tea cosy until 8.45 when all it needs is a flash in the microwave. It has a small amount of mixed spice and some fruit added (MS at the soaking stage). Sometimes he has Greek yoghurt with it or a spoon of jam.
I bought 6 rice pudding pots in Lidl for 20p and they can be heated in the MW or left cold. They make a nice change. He is not keen on the range of chemicals in them....

Re: Porridge toppings
I make porridge the way my dad did, with water. Once it’s made I used to add sugar but now sweetener and top it with milk, many moons ago it would’ve been the thick cream from Jersey milk. I don’t add any toppings because I just like it plain and unadulterated.

Re: Porridge toppings
Following the low carb way, I just use 28g of the Jumbo Oats, which take longer to digest. I add the milk and then grate an apple in and a level tsp. of cinnamon. I have this about once a week.
Re: Porridge toppings
One other thought on porridge.
If you have some cold “solid” left over porridge, it is very tasty if fried. It will probably go soft in the heat, but if the pan is hot you will get some nice tasty brown crusty bits.
It’s not for those who like their porridge sweet, or fruity.

Today's porridge was served with stewed plums, demerara sugar and a splash of cream.

Re: Porridge toppings
We had porridge today, first time in ages, prompted by this thread. We had 80gms between us with sunflower and pumpkin seeds - which gave it a bit of textural interest, plus a few grapes on top.
Just what we needed on this icy morning before tackling another difficult dog walk.........if it’s not mud it’s ice!

That sounds gorgeous . I really don’t like plums “raw” but they’re lovely cooked

Re: Porridge toppings
We are fortunate to have a couple of plum trees in the garden.
I stew the fruit and freeze it in a patty tin.
I can use the discs for porridge or put a load together to make a pudding.
