Beverages

my partner prefers that one, i rather like the caramel flavour. unfortunately there was none of either last time i went to lidl.
don't try making chocolate a la taza with the steaming wand - unless it's a commercial grade espresso machine. my gaggia couldn't cope with the thicker consistency - i thought it was going to give up the ghost!

Re: Beverages
It's worth giving it a go EM it's not outrageously expensive.
I've just noticed Ocado have the Whittards hot choc, I think I'll give this a try next. It's costs about 50% more but still not excessive (IMHO, other opinions are available ).
My machine will steam hot chocolate but thanks for the heads up re a la tazza Scully, don't think I need it quite that thick .

Re: Beverages
While I was in Mexico at the beginning of the year, I was invited to a restaurant specialising in Oaxacan food. The hot chocolate contained cacao beans ( because they could, I suppose), vanilla (because it´s originally from Mexico), honey, milk and chile Guajillo ( which I would qualify as a mild chile).
Chile and chocolate are both considered classic Mexican ingredients, so I suppose the combination is a result of hundreds of years of experimentation.
Many producers of plain chocolate, all across Latin America, will add chiles to their chocolate bars. I´ve tried many of them and none have failed so far.

Re: Beverages
You might like to try this one, we have their tea & coffee but not tried this yet, if it is anything like the tea & coffee it will be good.
The one thing against it, the postage in very expensive, if you just buy one.

Re: Beverages
Oooh I might try the Lidls one , hot chocolate is the only hot drink I like and I do think there’s a world of difference between a rubbish one you add hot water to and a decent one made with milk . I love chilli and chocolate together think they make a fantastic pairing
Re: Beverages
I veer towards aztec-minimalism - I like hot chocolate without any milk at all. but then I'm a no-milk-no-sugar coffee drinker and I like the flavour and bitterness. Likewise no-milk hot chocolate with some raw sugar and a good pinch of chilli and sometimes cardomom or a dusting of cinnamon.

Re: Beverages
Hot chocolate can be too milky to me
The best chilli chocolate bar I've had is from Montezuma (naturally) - they have a shop in Spitalfields and they aren't even that expensive, they also do mail order and are stocked in various delis

But I had a look and the only chocolate drink seems to be mint milk chocolate, which is out of stock

Re: Beverages
Those look really good Stokey - and free shipping on orders over £60! Sounds dangerous! That's one of each plus one.
I'm a fan of dark chocolate- my preferred. I keep stash of 90% cacao in the fridge. I also like to add it to hot chocolate.

are we looking at the same page‽‽
Re: Beverages
yes, i looked at the page but made £2.59 x15 (number of bars on that page) to add to a bit over £38 which would mean you would have to buy somewhat more than one of each bar (+1) to get free postage - more like 24 bars.

Re: Beverages
I have to disagree with you, slim... you can never have too much chocolate
Re: Beverages
You're correct Scullion. Still a lot of chocolate!
I agree KDKA!
Inspired by talk of hot choc and as I hadn't partaken for a while, I had one yesterday - no milk natch, 2 tbs cocoa, two tsp raw sugar as a treat - but no added dark chocolate this time - and a pinch of this and that. Very thumbs up.

Re: Beverages
That's interesting ZeroCook, because I bought some Green & Black cocoa the other day. I might dare to try the drink that you made! I do also like 90% chocolate.

Re: Beverages
I went through a stage as a child of making cocoa with only water & sugar as I didn’t like the smell of hot milk
Also much easier to use a kettle than heating milk

Re: Beverages
Why not give it a try, Renee. You might like it. Might be an acquired taste tho!
It is easier, Stokey, but I still bring it to a frothing boil in a small saucepan before pouring out- not quite sure why I do that except that I like a little froth and cocoa seems to need a liftle bit of cooking- but again, not sure if that's really the case or whether I just imagine that it does. Must investigate
How do you perceive cocoa or chocolate at the moment via your tricky olefactory receptors, Stokey? I find that I almost always go off coffee and solid chocolate when I get a cold or bug.

Re: Beverages
72% chocolate is great, I don't have total smell loss, so I'm getting some of the real flavour (though the vanilla seems to dominate), but the mouth feel is nice, and the balance between sweet and bitter is more interesting than a lot of foods; those aren't really affected by smell of course, they are tongue tastes.. Just having the odd square after dinner
Re: Beverages
I’ve not had Cocoa for years. Another non-milk drinker here. The sight of the milky hot chocolate drinks you see in coffee shops does nothing for me, all I can smell is hot milk. When I was a child I used to drink cocoa, with a spoonful of cocoa powder and sugar mixed to a paste with a little bit of milk and then hot water stirred in. I’d forgotten all about it - I must give it a try again.
Re: Beverages
And, on another subject. Disaster! Sainsburys hasn’t had any Fino Sherry for weeks now, and I am half way down my last bottle.
