Fiona Beckett’s own label Christmas wine recommendations have just gone online. https://www.theguardian.com/food/2020/n ... el-bottles
Re: Beverages
Regarding popular drinks that have gone out of fashion, the last wine tasting I did before moving was for Ros`e
I purchased 8 different Ros'e As I introduced each one before going on to a blind tasting,
I got an audible moan when I intruded the Mateus Ros`e as one they would try.
After the blind tasting & marks were counted the Mateus came 2nd, just goes to show.
The outright winner was the New Zealand "Mud House" Sauvignon Blanc Rose`e

Re: Beverages
Rosé has been increasing in popularity for a while in London I think, I certainly drink it! Mainly either Provençal or Spanis
The excitement locally is a new bubble tea place - that’s tea, either ordinary or fruit tea, with tapioca pearls in it. As I can’t stand either most teas or drinks with bits in, I won’t be a regular but apparently the bubble tea trend is a Big Thing

Re: Beverages
I thought that bubble tea had been 'in' for some time. I have certainly seen it around though not had the chance to try it yet. I'd really like to.
I remember going on a visit to a local vineyard a few years ago now where they were producing a delicious rose and it was being snapped up. At that time it was only just gaining popularity as a serious drink but think it is well established now. I don't really know why we laugh at things like Mateus and some German white wines which were popular in the 70s and early 80s. Some are still very nice in the right circumstances.

I think fashion dictates a lot of it and what's seen as the in thing. A lot of people turn their nose up at prawn cocktail and black forest gates unless it's served ironically but I think they're both still delicious at any time

I think it's been around for a long time, in Vietnamese noodle bars for example, what's new is the roll out of dedicated bubble tea outlets, independent or franchised, in shopping malls & high streets all over the place
I shan't be drinking any, but someone said their snacks - waffles, little pies etc - are quite good so I might yet end up in there
Re: Beverages
When DS2's Taiwanese partner was with us for Christmas, they came across a bubble tea outlet in Hammersmith station. I had never even heard of it until they brought some home one day.
We found it slightly odd, but not unpleasant, and I think she said that it is usually hugely over-sweetened so you have to request less sugar when you order it.

Re: Beverages
I've seen cold drinks in tins and bottles with "frog spawn" in, usually in places like Wing Yip. Never fancied them!

Re: Beverages
I bought a bottle of Luis Felipe Edward´s Sauvignon Blanc yesterday - about $9 a bottle.
Very good indeed - crisp, fruity, light and excellent with the salmon.

Re: Beverages
Costco have a nice Mosel wine at the moment. Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese. It's twice the price that we pay when we buy it at source though!!

If you go into the store you can buy it by the bottle.

Ahhh ... Bubble Tea! I had this on the morning of a wedding at the bride's home in Taipei more than 20 years ago. I most definitely won't be buying it!

Ooh - going to Morrison's tomorrow
I like the Bathtub too, but it's so strongly flavoured I don't want it all the time

Re: Beverages
Very fond of Tanqueray.
Pretty partial to Bombay Sapphire too, especially when it's the same price as Bombay London.

Tanqueray Gin £22 instead of £26 this is for a 1 Ltr bottle
Tanqueray London Gin £16 instead of £18 70cl
Tanqueray No 10 £26 instead of £32 70CL
read the reviews on the No 10 & decided against it

I like Tanqueray 10, I thought it was a bit smoother.
