Sprout ketchup??? Now I´ve heard it all!
The mind boggles... (although I´ve got a recipe for Sprout Paté somewhere. Positively volcanic, I imagine )

Re: Foodies In The News
I'm pretty sure that sprout pate was what was served at school dinners - well you could have fooled me that it was.
Cauldron Foods used to make a spinach and cream cheese pate, very peppery, which I really liked for a work lunch and wasn't at all explosive, thankfully. Haven't seen it for years, though there was a good lookalike recipe I found somewhere. After all, it's really just a poor man's fresh herb remoulade.
PS, I presume the ketchup means for sprouts, not made from them?

Ah yes, a sort of smooth tangy sprout chutney. I could see the ketchups working for a lunch in layered ramekin pots or tians, or in filled Yorks puds with leftover turkey or pork
If I were to make something similar at home (hopefully cheaper) I'd like the sprouts mixed with some mango chutney.

Well I won´t be making Stöllen. I find them a little uninteresting, with all due respect, but the cauli recipes look great.
Interesting looking recipe from David Atherton!

This is a nice read and reminds me that one day we will be able to go on holiday again. And I’m now very hungry after reading it.

KK. I like stollen but Lidl’s is good enough for me.

Re: Foodies In The News
There was a chap who used to post on the Beeb board (Paulthebread maybe?) who posted a recipe for a festive fruited loaf with marzipan running down the middle. I don't like Stollen very much but this was lovely and not at all dry. I think I've got the recipe somewhere.
Going on holiday seems an impossible dream.

I love a nice stollen. Always found that Aldi or Lidl ones are good, in fact 'German stuff' has been pretty much what I'd go there for.
I've tried making it before, didn't think the results were sufficiently superior to shop-bought to be worth continuing the experiment.

i'm a lidl stollen fan, too. i don't really like the look of 'flic's ' one - the marzipan looks solid and unmelted.
that column was a delightful read even though most of the food wouldn't float my boat.
the last item - the bananas - remind me of a vegetarian restaurant that used to be in pz that did the best ever baked spiced banana (that i used to make a replica of for my young).
the olive branch is long gone but the memory remains.

It was him, I have been making his "Christmas loaf" ever since.

It's not just panettone that's full of hot air
Re: Foodies In The News
I thought I was the only one who didn't like panetone!

She appears to have missed the point t entirely
Maria Floris, doyenne of Soho patisserie said you have plain, light, cakes and bakes like Madeira cake, brioche, panettone etc with rich drinks like Madeira, vin Santo or hot chocolate and rich cakes like cheesecakes or gateaux and tortes with simple tea or coffee

Re: Foodies In The News
Some nice things in all those articles PP. An interesting thought that the large supermarkets could be on their way out though its been said before. I can quite believe it. Hopefully it would mean a few more small shops for fresh goods to supplement big deliveries. I don't think that 'cheap' supermarkets will die so quickly.
Whilst I'm sure that Pannetone must be nice with something (its better toasted), I'm not sure that the amount one sees stacked up everywhere at Christmas equals the number of people who regularly enjoy a glass of Madeira and cake. It'd be interesting to do a survey of a cross section of the community to find out how many people do.

I have only ever been given Pannetone, (used to be corporate gifts at Christmas), but never actually bought one. I always make (luxury) B&B pudding with mine
