not for me, I'm afraid ...
Re: Foodies In The News
None of those pies look like the ‘tater pie’ that is served round here with pickled beetroot or red cabbage. Here, the filling is sort of mushy from the potatoes and it is a plate pie with no bottom crust. I’ve made a veggie version a few times, which my OH approved of.

Stokey Sue perhaps as it's based in Newington. https://dinneratthevicarage.co.uk/ I've signed up although we shall have to see if any of the bishops offer anything my OH is prepared to eat! I like it that today is Martinmas.
That’s Newington Butts near Elephant and Castle, not Stoke Newington!
A nice idea for a blog though
I hadn’t picked up on that at all Sue. I’ve followed Giles for years and really thought he was in your part of London because of all his Jewish connections.

Interested to see (via Kavey on FB) that Mamta has posted on her site about using banana skins in cookery. It is something she grew up with in Indian cookery as being quite normal. I rather think that they must change in texture and flavour and that a few spices probably help.

Another very interesting piece from Vittles. Who likes herrings?

I've often felt that if I had to limit myself to eating just one sort of animal, it would in all probability be the herring. Love rollmops.

I would rather an Arbroath Smokie .. Lidl used to sell them, much to my excitement, but the last couple of times I have been there (well before the first lock down), I couldn't find them

This is a nice read. As a nod to Diwali, Vanilla Penda.

I also love the Scandinavian sweet/sour pickled herrings!
Whilst on a visit to the market in Sittard in the Netherlands, we tried the Hollandse Nieuwe, which is a much loved delicacy and only available during certain months of the year. They are served with chopped raw onions. The young herrings are cleaned and salted on board the boats.

Having grown up near Great Yarmouth I'll have to promote the Bloater! I do love those sweet dill pickled herrings though
Love both those pieces PP. I have never made 'Indian' sweets but have eaten them - sparingly. Those look good and yes, I support Fairtrade when I can. It got me thinking about condensed milk which I have always bought in a tin. There must have been a time when something similar was made from scratch, presumably a reduced milk and sugar concoction, I believe sugar cane originated on the Indian continent so that makes sense but there would need to be a special method to stop the milk or cream splitting. I wonder how far the lovely Indian sweetmeats date back.
Ha ha re the books. I have made a high pile of the unread ones and am reading one at a time. I swore I wouldn't buy more until that was done. I have broken my oath already!

Em, are bloaters still available? I did once read that they were smoked with the innards still in them. My man friend has happy memories of buying bloater paste which doesn't seem to be available now.
Me too with the books.

I love all sorts of pickled herrings and am very fond of the different smoked cures. I adore Cley kippers and used to get a bloater every Saturday from Norwich market for tea.
