No, PP. It will be interesting to see how it pans out in the middle of lockdown. Those who celebrate with extended family must be very disappointed.

This is the second time this week I have seen suggestions for prettily decorated shortbread to offer as part of the celebration. Both have looked gorgeous and very festive but not something I had come across as a tradition before.

Wow. It is very late this year then. I stand corrected.

Could there be a blue cheese shortage this Christmas? Neal’s Yard’s blog.

Rachel Roddy's eggs in tomato sauce.

What interesting links you do come up with, PP :D

Meant to say I had absolutely no idea about the blue cheese issue - I think someone posted a thread on here about helping out British cheesemakers but I don't remember reading anything about potential blue cheese shortages. That really won't go down well at Christmas!

And EM, I like sprouts but I'm afraid some of the ideas on that other thread really sounded awful ....

I have come to the conclusion that I am much more of a fussy eater than I thought. Having just read the sprout link on another thread I am now faced with tripe in tomato sauce or sliced omelette. I think tripe tastes nasty so will go for the omelette - but as far as I'm concerned, eggs shouldn't go anywhere near tomato sauce and I'd rather just have a nice omelette or something else in tomato sauce (but not tripe). It must be great fun trying to come up with a 'different' cookery column on a regular basis.

I think a lot of people have problems with eggs and tomatoes together EM. Personally I can’t do egg and baked beans.

I think the sprout link is hilarious.

i find that rather odd - certainly never heard it before

Eggs and tomatoes are surely classic? Egg and tomato sandwiches, ketchup on a fried egg sandwich, various salads (including Niçoise), eggs Portuguese. nearly all the myriad variations on shakshuka/piperade require eggs and tomatoes together - eggs and tomatoes seem almost inevitable

I took PP's comment to mean a cooked tomato sauce, hence her comment re baked beans. I like tomatoes whether cooked or raw with eggs but prefer them separate on the plate. I do not like them sitting in tomato sauce as with shakshuka and similar dishes. Although classic dishes, I think some other people feel the same.

There´s a lovely breakfast/brunch dish over here called "Mojo Andino". Basically a spiced up tomato sauce with sweet chiles, and then the eggs are scrambled into the sauce. Served with arepas and a hot sauce made with fermented milk.
Now the wife´s back, I must get her to make it this week!

Are they finally at home? Or still in quarantine?

They arrived back on Friday evening, stayed in the hotel for one night and were told they could leave Saturday lunchtime, because my son is "special needs". So by 1.30pm Saturday, here they were!
Needless to say it´s a madhouse here, with 6 suitcases being unpacked, the phone ringing every five minutes, and the pleas for " why dont you cook ....(this that or the other not tasted for 12 months! :gonzo )

This new blog may or may not be of interest. Stokey Sue perhaps as it's based in Newington. https://dinneratthevicarage.co.uk/ I've signed up although we shall have to see if any of the bishops offer anything my OH is prepared to eat! I like it that today is Martinmas. 8-)

How fabulous! I love almost lost food/festival traditions! I only learned a few years ago that there had been a Martinmas Lent for Christmas as well as Easter. When you see the pre-Christmas greed nowadays I really like the thought. The whole church/farming year is so cleverly organised for feast and famine through the year so that there is enough to go round.

It would be nice to hope the Bishops observe some of them!

That’s Newington Butts near Elephant and Castle, not Stoke Newington!
A nice idea for a blog though
