Recommendations for spice grinder

Postby Sloe-Gin » Sat Jan 01, 2022 3:48 pm

The time has come, the walrus said....
to talk of replacing my mini spice grinder.
And what better people to ask than the foodie community here.
My current one is... ahem... a few years old and this morning, a fair amount of the ground spice seemed to be escaping somehow.
New year's day seems a suitable time to take stock.
TIA

We have touched on this before, notably on the Christmas present thread

For years I managed with a cheap coffee grinder, but those aren’t as cheap and cheerful as they used to be though Argos start around £20. Coffee mills don’t always grind as fine as you’d prefer for spices, and they aren’t good if you add wet stuff like chilli, garlic and ginger to make a paste.

I now have the Cuisinart, it’s great, it grinds talcum powder fine, I think it will last a lifetime but my only reservation is that it still doesn’t grind pastes very well, I have days when it works and days when it doesn’t, I should play around and see if I can work it out. It also grinds nuts for baking, this is very good price

Yup, that's the one I got for my Christmas present from DS2, after our conversations and advice on here :thumbsup

I haven't tried it for pastes (I have an odd feeling it doesn't suggest using for pastes in the instruction/recipe booklet but will check).

Great for spices.

It did breadcrumbs as well, although I had to chop the bread quite small. On the other hand i've not had much success with breadcrumbs in the Magimix, and it is definitely a great improvement on my expereience with that.

ETA it has a second mill, which means if you want to use it for coffee there's no cross-contamination from spices.

I have the older version of the one Sue suggests. I'm very happy with it.

I have the Delonghi grinder: https://www.amazon.co.uk/DeLonghi-Blade ... th=1&psc=1

and it pulverizes spices to a fine powder.

You leave your hand down on the push button, and it lights up the results going from course to fine, as you prefer it.

Says it's a coffee grinder, which is brilliant for my black peppercorns and other seeds.

Rhik Samadder reviewed the Cuisinart for the Guardian: spoiler he’s a huge fan.

And he makes pastes in it, as he mentions fish sauce, maybe my problem is just making my pastes too dry and a splash of liquid is all I need
