christmas nibbles
What are you making?
We go to the cinema on Christmas Eve, and like to come back to light bites, as it will be about 9pm when we are nibbling.
So far, Tony has requested prawn vol-au-vents (that's an assembly job, after I've baked Iceland cases).
Sausage rolls - I've heard Iceland again does excellent ones. I'll buy them.
That's the pastry ones sorted.
Any other mini gems to consider please?

Re: christmas nibbles
Sausage rolls are compulsory in this family (Pa’s favourite, even if he’s not here to eat them now) Smear some tomatoey-chilli jam over the pastry before wrapping the sausage meat … marvellous).
Devils on Horseback are a favourite too.
Tom Kerridge did some very simple looking spiced nuts on tv the other day … I might try those this year.

Oh, coincidence, Rockiness.
I wrapped salmon and cream cheese as a nibble for our art group yesterday - bring a tray, but not with bread. They went in minutes, about as quickly as it took me to assemble in the morning.
I'll look for the Tom K spiced nuts recipe, Suffs. Thank you.

Re: christmas nibbles
We have venison sausage rolls - easy with nice sausagemeat from our butcher and ready-made all-butter puff. Filo tarts with roasted tomato and feta or roast pumpkin, Stilton & walnut. Smoked salmon & cream cheese on bagels cut into small sections. rounds of French stick served hot, with mushroom & melted Stilton.
Re: christmas nibbles
I heard this morning that there's been a glitch and the farm shop haven't received some of their dried fruit delivery so my prunes won't be in my Christmas fruit and veg order next week ... they're going to send pitted dates instead ...we'll have plenty of blue cheese so they'll do for our Devils on Horseback.
Re: christmas nibbles
there was something on a tv programme tonight (escape to the chateau - yes - guilty) called berawecka/berauwecka, from the alsace/rhineland area.
i'd never heard of it before but it looks like something we would really like - dried fruit and nuts, macerated in kirsch and held together with a (very) little improved bread dough.
i have found a recipe or two.

Re: christmas nibbles
I've got that recipe in my tourist office recipe book from the Alsace, Scullion.
It looks amazing, well spotted.
We went there for our 10 wedding anniversary and it was the coldest place, you do need that sort of food there.
Blue cheese and bacon sounds an excellent alternative combination, Suffs.
So far, I've made m'chilli cheese straws ...

i have just put the fruit to macerate overnight unfortunately i had no kirsch - so i've used a slosh of cassis with some apricot brandy - i guess it'll do - smells good.

I’m not a sprout lover, so wouldn’t go for these anyway, but I’m not sure who else would either. The suggestion for less fattening canapés involved a charred sprout on a cocktail stick with a cube of Parmesan. From my point of view it’s just No! Though I’d eat the Parmesan.

That doesn't sound great, Wic! I'm not that keen on parmesan as an 'eating' cheese, or cold sprouts. That said, my grandmother used to sprinkle powdered nuts over left over
sprouts to eat cold and they were surprisingly good.
berawecka/berauwecka, sounds wonderful.
Thinking about the Christmas nibbles, you can't go wrong with cheeses and crackers .

Good thinking, EM.
Cheese and crackers will be put out.
I'll give the sprouts on a stick a miss though.

Re: christmas nibbles
I'll be picking up some smoked cod's roe from the fishmonger sometime tomorrow to turn into a garlicy taramasalata for christmas eve/day nibbling with toasted pitta triangles - still not feeling the festive vibe tho'........
Re: christmas nibbles
I’ll be making Delia’s cheese & onion rolls, plus some vegan sausage rolls with Richmond sausages mixed with veggie black pudding.
I’ll also make Dan Lepard’s stollen bites, some mincemeat cupcakes and rocky road. Just need to find the motivation as I’m not feeling at all festive.

Re: christmas nibbles
Mmm, I’m generally not a nibble person and I certainly wouldn’t eat virtually all of the ones posted so far. My preferred ones would be plain and simple cheese, biscuits, grapes with some olives. Could be argued that it’s more like a cheese board but I’d add some sausage rolls etc to it as well.
Cheers

Not surprised, smitch, maybe the therapeutic baking will help
