Rutland Cheese ... do you remember it?

Postby Suffs » Sat Oct 30, 2021 12:09 pm

Does anyone remember a cheese which we think was sold as 'Rutland Cheese' ... it was a sort of slightly softer cheddary texture, and was flavoured with herbs, beer and garlic ... I bought it quite often and DD and her Grandpa both loved it ... it was obviously made in large blocks because I remember it was sold cut up and wrapped in cling film ... I can't remember where I bought it from ... might have been Sainsbugs .... but it seemed to disappear in the late 80s/early 90s. DD asked about it the other day ... she misses it but neither she nor I can find any trace of it on t'internet or anywhere else for that matter.

never heard of it - but goggling throws up a rutland red - which doesn't sound like the one you're talking about.

Nope, DD and I have both been goggling over the past few days and we can find nothing that matches up ...

I don't remember it but the 60s section in this history of the Long Clawson cheesemaking suggests that they introduced several blends in the 60s and 70s that didn't stand the test of time. I suspect it was one.

I quite liked Lymeswold.

Thank you EM … it looks as if you’ve solved the puzzle. :clap :thumbsup

DD came up with this http://nittygrits.org/rutland which confirms that it’s a mixture DD says she might have a go at making it herself and freezing it in toast-shaped slabs … I’ve suggested she uses powdered dried garlic and dried parsley … but which beer??? Some tasting trials may be needed.

Any suggestions folks?

I’d have thought a traditional bitter would work

@smitch :hi5: I was thinking I’d suggest Adnams bitter … then I could drink any leftovers ;)

Ruddles would be appropriate.
