just remembered a favourite school pud, which mum also made sometimes
A steamed (or baked at home I think) ginger sponge with canned pears in the bottom, sauce of the thickened syrup from the tin a well as custard or cream
I have done a version with fresh pears I think, though tbh if you are going to give poached pears a second cooking there's not much difference between fresh and the fruit canned in juice rather than syrup, other than using up a glut
