crumble help ....

Postby KeenCook2 » Sun Sep 12, 2021 6:15 pm

I got distracted and left my crumble mix in the magimix too long so it has turned into a sort of dough.

What do you think the best way of using it is now? I've got cooked apples ...

Thx!

If you chill it, you might be able to crumble it into chunky bits with your fingers or a couple of forks. Then proceed as usual.

I also had complicated ideas about creaming enough butter and sugar to bring your mix up to the proportions of a sponge (with some added egg and baking powder) and baking that on top of the apples, but that might be throwing good ingredients after bad. :)

yes, I was thinking about more complicated things - I've never made a "cobbler" and had a vague feeling that was not dissimilar - but I think distributing it across the top of the fruit is the best option. It tastes great!

My mother used to make a sort of apple shortcake which involved a mix of buttery shortbread-type proportions similar to crumble, flattened out onto a baking sheet and topped with sliced apples and brown sugar. It was baked until the base was just done and the apples not burned. We considered it a treat and had it with top of the milk!

Glad it worked out well KC2.
I was thinking either a shortcake cobbler type dish, or an apple slice - a layer of shortcake mix topped with apples mixed with sugar & cornflour and topped with another layer of shortcake then sprinkled with caster sugar once baked. A small bakery near where some of my staff used to be based did the most wonderful ones. Just as well I wasn't there every day!

I'd do the same, keep calm and carry on.

There's a bit of the mix left and I think I might just pop it on a tin and turn it into some sort of shortbread ... it had some ground almonds in it as well and is really tasty - but that's what happens when you get sidetracked and the magimix is on

That's why I usually use my food processor on 'Pulse' so I can't just leave it running :)

Could you grate it to get an approximation of crumble , or id just cut into shreds , top the fruit with it and if in doubt add custard !!
