Perhaps it's a bit like pancakes - after cleaning the griddle, you can always expect the first one to stick. Very annoying if you're only making one!

Oh no.
Mine is completely non-stick. I don't oil the plates at all.
I just wash them in soapy water, and put them back in the machine for the next time.
Did your recipe have butter in it?
Do you oil your plates before use - I don't as I've just said.

How annoying! Do you grease the waffle maker before adding the mixture? I realise you mention cleaning and oiling but imagine that's when you put it away. I know they're supposed to be non stick but I always use a very small amount of spray oil which I find helps.
Re: First waffle 'disaster'
The waffle maker has to be oiled (I use a rapeseed oil spray from Tesco) before use. You switch it on and spray, then leave several minutes to reach temperature. Then you pour the batter mixture in and cook for 6-7 minutes. Usually it's fine but not this morning. It has a three year guarantee from Lakeland and I will return it if it keeps playing silly b's.
