This is quite a common cheese on sale in supermarkets in the UK. I wouldn't say it was really top notch but I think you'd find it delicious if you like Cheddar.

It's a factory made cheese, but it's not unpleasant.
I buy it for sauces or for cheese and pickle sandwiches sometimes.

Far cheesier (stronger) than anything I tasted in the Tillamook facory :)

I buy it but it's not my fave (factory cheese) :) But definitely worth a try. It depends on how much going out of your way is involved, I suppose.

It’s my bog standard to-go cheese for cooking and sandwiches because it’s usually on special offer somewhere. It wouldn’t grace a nice cheeseboard though.

Yes, I'd agree with all of the above.

I have a feeling Greg Wallace might have done one of those In the Factory programmes from there? I think I meant to watch it but then didn't, for whatever reason

It is o/k nothing special but as good as most mass produced Cheddars.
I bought some Godminster Cheddar yesterday, a local Somerset cheese, now that is well worth going out of your way for
Also bought Dorset Blue Vinny another favourite of mine made in the next county to me,
Vinny comes from the now obsolete word "Vinew" which means mould.
The other Cheese I bought was "Little Lilly" a soft Goats Cheese another one made here in Somerset
Role on Christmas

Ditto here ... but I wouldn’t bother with the one on the left ... only the Extra Mature and Vintage.

Personally I would avoid the extra mature.
Likely to burn your mouth.

If you can get it easily, without spending a fortune it’s worth a try

As others have said it’s a fairly standard English cheddar, though a decent one but from your perspective you will find it interestingly different from US cheddars - even good Wisconsin cheddar, which is a decent cheese by anybody’s standards, is rather different in style

I’m not Massively keen on cathedral city but I like a really mature tangy cheddar . For a standard everyday cheddar , I actually prefer pilgrims choice , has a bit more flavour

If I had to pick one of the 3 Big Brands, I think I’d go for Davidstow in the UK

But Mark’s in the USA, so availability is different

To pick my actual favourite, I’d be torn between Westcombe amd Montgomery, less enthused by Keen’s (funny, there seem to be 3 again when you look at widely available West Country farmhouse cheddars)

I think it's still around. MIL used to choose it when I took her shopping.

As most have said, it's quite reasonable for a mass produced product and very handy for sauces and sandwiches. I'd definitely go for the extra mature or vintage. Like Amy though, I prefer Pilgrim's Choice to this but I doubt you'd be able to find that Mark.

Hickybank - coincidentally, I was sent a tasting box of cheese from The Cheese Society the other day, as a gift, and it had some organic Godminster cheddar - one of the best I've ever tasted! I'd normally go for Montgomery's but I think the Godminster will replace it when I can get hold of it.

the cathedral city cheddar is made in the davidstow factory alongside the davidstow brand, here in cornwall. it may be made to a different recipe but i wouldn't know.
a decent, bog standard cheddar (- far better than the tinned 'cheddar' that i had over that side of the pond some years back!).

We have a local street market on a Friday with a great Cheese stall, Godminster is not cheap @£5.50 for a 200g round, I bought 2 for Christmas, The Blue Vinny was even more expensive @ £28 per 1Kg & the Little Lilly was £5.50 for 140g

But that wasn’t what Mark in the USA was asking.

Mark, there's a consensus on here. Everyone has damned it with faint praise. I would do the same. It's a perfectly good example of a mass produced English Cheddar, worth checking out if you like that style of cheese. The three grades have got different degrees of strength/saltiness/sharpness, but as has been alluded to, there are rather more characterful Cheddars available over here. One of the consolations of a potential UK/US trade deal might be that the excellent artisan cheeses produced on each side of the pond might become more readily available on the other. In that regard, we might all be in for a treat.
