Re: IT'S HERE!!!!!!!
I saw a tv prog about Mrs Beeton - her books were largely a hack job; she and Mr Beeton and various other people assembled recipes and tips from other sources, though she did a lot of writing and editorial work, while mainly pregnant, she lost all the babies. Not a very happy life, RIP Isabella Beeton

And only 29 when she died

Fleming who discovered penicillin worked at St Mary’s Paddington, though Florey & Chain who made antibiotics a practical reality were Oxford
One of my medical heroes is Semmelweis, who made doctors and midwives remove their outdoor jackets, roll up their sleeves, and wash the exposed skin, and their instruments, having worked out that medics must be transmitting puerperal fever from one confinement to another, really important move
Sorry, I have taught history of medicine in my work
Edited to remove 2 annoying autocorrect bloopers

Sue, don't apologise. It's fascinating and I'd love to hear more....

Stoked Sue, my children have since their youngest days have known me for my most famous hobby horse, about Florey and Chaim and how Fleming famously took all the credit. What I meant was how Oxford University had achieved such miracles and I heard last week that they are developing a malaria vaccine which is now being trialled in Kenya and BekinoFasso.

(And yes, my degree is in modern social history with an emphasis on medicine) so I understand!

And look what happened to poor Semmelweis, locked up for the rest of his days for shaking the medical establishment to its foundations.

Yes Florey and Chaim are the lost heroes of the story, an d a couple of young army doctors who managed to roll it out under terrible conditions, recording their observations and making some good choices
I'm not holding my breath on the malaria vaccine, I worked for 43 years in drug development, and there was a promising vaccine every few years, none of them were ever released for use

Re: IT'S HERE!!!!!!!
I'm a bit concerned about Grassie and her mum - is anyone able to make contact?
Re: IT'S HERE!!!!!!!
Didn't Grassy post yesterday that her mum had the all clear? Hope she's OK. Perhaps she's just tied up with other things? I seem to recall that on the old forum she sometimes missed the odd day with the advent calendar.

GOODWILL AND CUSTARD!!!!!!!!!
MAJOR problem yesterday evening! We had a power short! We were all innocently watching TV when everything went off - lights, tv, all appliances, the lot!
Thankfully, after phoning our sparky, who's retired, but still does little jobs for a select few, we managed to get the important things, such as the freezers, going again (which was a MASSIVE relief, as they are both FULL). BUT in order to protect the freezers, we could only have a small number of things plugged in, such as one tv (we have 2), the freezers and the kettle, I was unable to post last nite.
Thankfully, he came this morning and fixed a loose connection in the fusebox.
So everything will go smoothly from now on.
So, 2 doors to open!
WHAT'S BEHIND THE DOOR TODAY?????
*Opens first door*
Did You Know that in the French Harry Potter books, Voldemort's middle name is Elvis?
Uh huh uh huh
And
*Opens second door*
Did You Know that a whole orange will float on water, but will sink if peeled?
'Till next time!

Grasshopper
Spring ventures forth to plant the grain
And Summer dries the straw.
Autumn gathers in the harvest
And Winter shuts the door.

Brilliant to see you back, Grassie. You never fail to entertain us with your bizarre factoids. Great!

Re: IT'S HERE!!!!!!!
Well, good that it was sorted & you are all OK Grassy
I wonder why Elvis? I'd have guessed that Marvolo would sound rather good in French but maybe it doesn't work for other reasons
Ah - I cheated and looked it up, it's so the anagram still works, Tom Elvis Jedusor (anagram of ‘Je suis Voldemort’)

I suppose it might also be because "Vol de mort" could sound odd to the French.
A flight of death - or a theft of death?
Good job they decided on Elvis, rather than Michael Jackson
