Didn´t know that, but I went to a place in Mexico that sold them.
The place was packed: had to worm my way through the crowd to get a table.
The waiter asked me if I wanted to drink something. Tequila, maybe?
"Yes, " I said, " Gimme a slug from that bluebottle on the counter"
He beetled off and came back with the tequila and the menu.
" I´ll have the Scorpion Special, with French Flies"
16 Tequilas later, I said:
"Gnat wash veryy goood. Great grub! Jusht gimme the bill cos I´ve gotta fly"
"OK", said the waiter." Just a tick - I´ll only bee a minute"

Did You Know that everyone on Palmerston Island, in the middle of the Pacific, speaks with a Gloucestershire accent?

I had no idea that the Pacific Ocean was in Gloucestershire! :?

I have a colleague who'd make a great stand-up if she ever got bored with being a subject librarian.

I had to really think what a Gloucestershire accent sounded like - but of course, it's Tom Kerridge isn't it!

I suspect Lord Palmerston himself sounded rather different

A quick Wiki reveals that Capt, Cook discovered the island, and named it after Lord Palmerston, the Lord of the Admiralty. The island was uninhabited.
In 1863, Willian Marsters, a ship´s carpenter and barrel maker, arrived on the island with his two Polynesian wives... and soon found a third.
He barreled (sorry - sired) 23 children, whose descendants still live on the island.
Sounds like he was pretty good with the screwdriver.

You´ve got me there, Grassy.
As you say , it was invented in Germany and called "SternHalma" - stern is star, because of the shape of the pieces.
Halma ( from the ancient greek " Jump") was invented by an American surgeon in the 1880s.
The name Chinese Checkers was invented as a marketing scheme, by two Americans. Their original game was called " Hop Ching Checkers" :? :? :? :? :?

Sounds like this game has got a checkered past...

I´m sure I could come up with some puns here, but the humour would be so acid, I´d probably burn a hole in my laptop.

Wiki says the game was invented by an Englishman called Anthony Pratt. Well he certainly wasn´t - he was a musician.
What´d you say Pepper Pig? Could we two musicians come up with a fiendish scheme to ensure the demise of Dr Black using a ´cello bow and an ocarina? Lento, ma non troppo?

Did You Know that Deathwatch beetles attract mates by repeatedly banging their heads on the floor?

A rather painful way to go wooing, if you ask me ;)

Goodwill And Custard!!!!!!

It's Day 24, which means just 3 and a bit weeks after we opened the first door, we are opening the very last one.

I know, I know, it goes so quickly, doesn't it?

So, for one last time. Do it for Soggy! Let's raise the roof!

WHAT'S BEHIND THE DOOR TODAY?????

*opens last door*

Did You Know that a single bolt of lightning contains enough energy to cook 100,000 pieces of toast?

Butter, anyone? ;)

Well, that's it, the last Random Factoid for this calendar. My thanks to our audience, to Sakkarin for providing this new studio, and to the elves at QI, who provided this year's factoids.

And thank, you, Soggy, for keeping us entertained during December!

But we can't go without quoting the closing lines of Clement Moore's poem 'The Night Before Christmas'.

But I heard him exclaim
As he drove out of sight,
"Merry Christmas to all,
And to all a good night!"

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODE!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, thanks for the much needed bit of fun this month - appreciate it :)

Hopefully a great big door will open on 2021 for a more fun year and one that brings prosperity to all those who desperately need some.
