Sorry, I thought I'd checked UK/US but get brain freeze in the early hours. Hopefully similar equivalents are UK based, which'd be easier to find once you know what you're looking for. Or if not, then maybe we deprived Brits somehow manage to struggle through without 8-)

We learnt from experience years ago that yacht varnish develops those white rings if you put a hot coffee mug on it.

Last time I used yacht varnish was to paint the wooden bits on my Morris Traveller.

I’ll get me coat . . . . :D

Not at all, as the last time I used yacht varnish was to paint a piece of 15mm marine plywood that formed the ceiling under a tiled porch roof. It was to make a decent job of replacing a ratty bit of sagging 5mm hardboard(!) that drowned you every time it was raining. (One of many cheapo fixes I found when moving into a house full of the darn things.)

White rings are better prevented. I remember an easy cure - if I only I could remember it, doh. Is it mayonaise or some such? NB for rings on wood, not varnish.
