I would hazard a guess and say the ONLY place in the world that folks have a penchant for runny, barely cooked boiled eggs and bits of buttered bread is the UK. :gonzo :gonzo :gonzo

  yet fried or poached eggs with runny yolks are
enjoyed with bread or toast in many places - as are dishes such as egg flip or steak tatare. There's no logic to it!

On poached eggs, have you tried poaching in clingfilm.
They turn out really nice

Hicky - I always poach them in clingfilm, because I´ve never got the hang of doing them the "proper" way.
Of course, there´s the added advantage that you can do a dozen poached eggs at the same time in clingfilm 8-) 8-)
The other thing is that you can add herbs, spices, whatever to them!

That's it, my next egg will be poached! I've never poached an egg despite really wanting to try, just thought it too unpredictable in the pan  .

Cheers Hicky.

Once poached in clingfilm, you can remove them flour, eggwash and breadcrumb them and have a crispy coated soft egg!!

I wonder if you can do them in tempura?

You get a lovely round shape, much better than something resembling a psychedelic Cowpat

Definitely the way I'm going to try next time we have poached eggs!
My only worry would be the clingfilm in boiling water ... whether it gave off unpleasant chemicals or melted or whatever .... but as it's t & t for some of you, I'm sure it's fine!

I've known for a long time that eggs could be poached in cling film. Never tried it myself though as I usually settle for soft boiled. I understand that the cling film does have to be of a certain standard, however, these days I don't use clingfilm for ethical reasons. I never replaced the roll when it ran out.

When my son announced his engagement, we had a "brunch". Baguettes slathered with cream cheese, a touch of garlic and dill; capers, smoked salmon and poached eggs on top, I can assure you I made 14 poached eggs in clingfilm, all came out at the same time, each one cooked as I wanted - no chemical problems, no clingfilm meltdown!

:D good to know, KKA! How long do you leave them once the cold water has come to the boil?

They take 3-4 mins at a rolling boil.
You can see how they are done on the utube clip I posted earlier

Yep, spot on Hicky. I use the timer on my oven and do them for 4 minutes.

Who would have thought hard boiled eggs would have caused Pandora box to open again.

With the hard boiled ones, i could split them lengthwise and scoop out the yolks and with the mayo and hot dog mustard packets I have stashed away, I could easy do warm deviled eggs for breakfast.

I recall the king of stylee doing eggs in cling film. Not sure if he started that trend but it sure looks interesting of the idea of a boil in a zip lock bag omelette. I refer you to this on delish.com

I cook eggs in pans
Poached in hot water, omelettes in a little butter (for a soft light French omelette) or olive oil for a set frittata.. I find it takes more time and stress to fiddle about with cling film

I have recently decided that Simon Hopkinson and Felicity Cloake are right though and you can time boiled eggs more accurately if you use a pan with a lid

...

mark111757, egg wars are quite common this side of the Pond :D

Simon Hopkinson, in the article Stokey Sue linked, offers his view on boiled eggs:
"To be frank, spending a small part of one's life perfecting the cooking and eating of a morning egg is, for me, high on the list of good things to do. Far more important than sex. And texting."

Follow that!
