I love andouillettes
The waiter in Zedel’s was reluctant to let me order them as I am English ... until I’d convinced him that I knew what they were and had eaten them many times before ... but he’d also initially been reluctant to take my order for Steak tartare

Oh my, there are some crackers here! The tin of whole thrushes!
Suffs your meal on the Cornish coast reminds me of dinner in a pub near Hartland in Devon. A group of us walked into the pub and the few locals in there just stared. We asked the land lady (think Kathy Bates in Misery) if we could eat and she said we could have “meat soup” or “steak with onions and stuff”. We were a bit dubious but agreed we’d have 8 lots of that. 20 minutes of listening to swearing and clattering in the kitchen and we were served some truly awful food. One of our party went to the gents and it was wall papered in gay nazi porn We paid the bill and scarpered!

Way back in the dark ages - probably around 1960! - a group of us 14/15 year olds from school went trainspotting around Devon. We were in Exeter at lunchtime and went into a "nice" cafe. One which our families had been to on the odd occasion before. It was usually good and we all knew what decent food was. Some of us ordered the steak and chips. I have no idea what the chef thought he was doing, but the steak came thinly sliced and grilled until it was crispy, like well cooked bacon. You could pick up a piece and tap it on the plate. We sent it back, and the chef came storming out of the kitchen and said that he knew how to cook meat and that we wasn't going to be told otherwise by "children".
We all got up to leave, when the owner intervened and sorted it out to our satisfaction.

Reminds me of a chippy in a village in West Cumbria we once went to, that was papered from floor to ceiling with 'creationist' literature. The fish & chips were pretty dire too if I recall correctly.
Food, felines and fells (in no particular order)

we also haven't been back to a local pub we used to eat at regularly, nearly forty years ago, when my partner was served peas which had obviously been left out of the freezer - or used as bruise/burn coolers and put back in the freezer multiple times after defrosting.
after complaining about them being off, the waitress came back from the kitchen saying that the owner/cook had said that it was a special, secret additive that they put in them to enhance the flavour. i think my shock at the lie was obvious through my answer.
it surprises me that some people who run restaurants are so arrogant in thinking that they know better than their customers - if something is off it's off!
they've probably changed hands quite a few times since then and even though they are only a couple of miles away we haven't felt the need to return.
we have also been served a squash risotto (yes, the only vegetarian option on the menu) by a chef who had had a michelin star or two at his previous restaurant - that was still frozen in the middle.

I must have posted at the same time as someone else. The vegetarian offering on a Greek Dancing night out on Leros - package holiday c 1991 (I was young, I was foolish, I was broke): a whole marrow that seemed to havee been cooked in about half a litre of olive oil. Nothing else. No herbs, no cheese. Just marrow swimming in oil. I was not served well whenever we went on an excursion on that holiday. Sometimes the promised vegetarian options proved to not exist at all. It was particularly irksome, as I did eat out quite well in restaurants.
I really enjoyed the dancing and seemed to be quite good at it. (The next time I tried, some years later at my friend's wedding recepttion in Athens, I was rubbish. In both cases, I suspect due to alcoholc. As with playing pool, you have to get the balance just right.)
