Although much of it doesn't sound new, it's probably interesting to see what he has to say. Ditching large amounts highly processed food is probably the best advice to start with.

I have been swayed by calorie counts on menus before. It won't necessarily mean you make a good alternative choice but it makes you stop and think and might make you forgo a pudding you didn't need.

I’ll read that later
Tim Spector is of course the man behind the Zoë Covid app, the twin studies A and is Mr Biome

He’s actually a geneticist

Ah, I was wondering if it was one and the same Tim Spector. I assumed it might well have been.

I have absolutely no interest in seeing calorie counts on menus when eating out. I rarely eat out these days and it's a treat so I will eat what I want.

I can't think of anything worse than counting calories when out for a meal - if I was diet oriented I would save calories by not eating anything all day, or the next, & enjoy that meal whatever the calories - otherwise why bother to eat out?

I don't visit Wetherspoons very often and eat there still less, but I once considered their rack of ribs. However, with onion rings, coleslaw and chips it was in excess of 2000 kCal, never mind the free drink! To this day I haven't tried it. If the caloric info had not been there I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

I used to enjoy the occasional Dr Oetker pizza especially if I was late getting home, but when I saw that it was over 900 kCal, I stopped buying them. I could easily eat a whole one and they have a nice thin and crispy base.

I'm not interested in the calorific content of a meal on the rare occasions that I eat out.

Hmm I have some reservations about that article, not sure if Bee Wilson or Tim Spector is more responsible.
For example the article says
“Nutrition scientists divide all foods into three simple categories: fats, proteins and carbohydrates. But this is “scientific nonsense”, Spector notes. “
Of course they don’t - to claim that an entire category of professional scientists other than the one you belong to deals in “scientific nonsense” is merely arrogant rudeness. Armchair nutrition experts may well do that but not the majority of serious scientists working in the field.

The whole tone is a little bit suggestive of destroying one myth to replace it with another.

Exactly. And it makes you wonder if the majority of the population even concern themselves about how many calories they are consuming, or whether their meals are full of fibre, or vitamin X, or what ever. I´d have thought that most people go out for a meal to enjoy it, and that´s it, Those who fret about their vitamin /fibre/transfats/carbohydrate/sugar intake must really spoil their outing!

What an interesting article. I knew some of it but certainly not all. Amazing creatures.

I've had smoked eel and jellied eel but not elvers. Can't say it's really in my top 10 list of foods but smoked is best.

Stewed with mash isn't bad either. :yum

Rarely eat them these days. I've got a copy of The Book of Eels.

When you have them with mash and liquor, do you still have to chew your way round the skin and bones?

Yes, the pieces are just like the jellied ones. I can understand why some people would object to the bones, it never occurred to me that the skin might be a problem.

I'd completely forgotten Ruth Watson. At one time she was all over the telly. She's selling her books and this looks like a shameless plug.

What a wonderful collection!

Re the eel skin. I have only had jellied eels once. The skin was quite thick and leathery and not at all nice to eat. Perhaps when served with mash & liquor it is softer. The actual meat was nice. I am not adverse to removing skin or bone but there was an awful lot of it.
