I should think you'd have to watch them like a hawk!

The first UK Amazon Go contactless store has opened in Ealing

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-56266494

The idea is you activate an app on your phone as you enter the store, fill your shopping bag as you go round, and as you leave the bill is added up and your account charged.

Not sure it’s for me

i think the returns facility might be useful, for the locals, but I'm not sure i'd want amazon access to my ordinary shopping basket - i get enough fake emails from them, and they haven't always been good with their online security.

As one step to developing Amazon Go was the acquisition of Wholefoods Market, I'll be interested to see if there is any change to the way our local branch operates as they learn how to use the tricks

Their time and motion people certainly improved the layout about 200%, they got more stuff in while making it easier to navigate

Pepper posted a link for Rachel Roddy´s Olive Oil & Apple cake the other day. It intrigued me, so I made it last night. As I mentioned, I had all the ingredients except the apples, and ricotta is something I often struggle with as an ingredient. Stuffed canneloni, and that´s about it, so here was an opportunity.
The cake was very easy to make and tasted very nice indeed! Would I change anything? Well apples aren´t a local fruit, so I had to do with Gala, but if I were in the UK, I´d definitely use cooking apples to add an extra tang.

The cake looks good KK. Does it taste of olive oil?

I hate the thought of the Big Brother society and a lot that Amazon stands for, plus the crafty tax-dodging and automation which reduces employees needed and doesn't offer great working conditions. I hate that we'll probably be a cashless society before long and that so many traditions are dying as the 21st century unfolds. That said, if you shut your eyes and kid yourself that those things aren't happening, Amazon can also be so cheap and convenient and I'd love to shop without the inconvenience of even scanning. It will be hard for those who have to budget carefully and for those with toddlers who like to pop the odd surprise into the shopping basket and I wonder if they'll do annoying random checks when you're in a hurry. It's the way forward. Lord knows what sort of system will be in place for people to afford to live without jobs once workplaces are fully automated but we always knew it was coming.

It does, EM, but it´s not overpowering. I was really chuffed, because it only took 30 minutes to prepare and also because i´m not a great baker!

The frozen blocks of garlic and ginger are OK as a failsafe. I find they're too big and the garlic overwhelms the ginger for my taste, so the best way for me is to grind each, add a little oil and open freeze each paste separately in smaller dollops before bagging up.

Ginger is often dry in shops and even worse if only sold as prepacked in supermarkets so I make a big batch of paste when I find super fresh rhizomes.

The combo is always my primary starter as I dislike the smell of onion and garlic frying together.

I don't find it difficult to split a frozen tablet, and you can get ginger and garlic separately

It's also much cheaper than diy!

These... I leave on the side for five minutes, then use as little or as much as I want. Perfect. And no oil involved.

I think other supermarkets sell them too.

A bit of feedback on the olive oil/Apple cake.
For me it was "nice", which is pretty non-commital. My son and my wife, however, thought it was delicious and scoffed the lot in two days. Mind you, i´m not really a "cake" person.
