Feral, all feral
Re: 1 space or 2 after a full stop?
dennispc, you and me both as my son, a decade beyond his teems, has the faux-theatrical or ex-trendy "like" firmly embedded and scatters the word liberally, e.g. "it was like...and I was like...". Drives me dotty.
Pampy, your post 11.10 today: Expressing oneself clearly and simply is hardly hyperbole. I have no objections whatsoever to personal style although I can't accept your suggestion implying that 12,000 words aren't enough to choose from to convey a thought as intended. Still, nothing to lose sleep over . Care to join me?

My comment about using hyperbole was referencing a specific ex-poster on this site, not a sweeping generalism.

I got that, just didn't see the relevance since I've never suggested that excessive use of multiple adjectives or hyperbole was desirable.
You trying to get me drunk? Cheers

heard a phrase that grates with me just now - back in the day
It doesn't make sense to me at all - back in the day = breakfast time?

Seeing as we’re mentioning expressions, there was a letter on today’s Guardian about using the ‘bathroom’ in the cinema. I’m afraid I’ve written a waspish letter back to the paper. I know it is very trivial but it just sounds so twee to me. It’s an Americanism that I can do without.

Stokey Sue, that reminds of that Monty Python sketch, c.3 mins:

cherrytree, I was surprised when I first learned lavatory stemmed from "to wash". My dad told us off if we called it the new-style "loo". Finding the ladies room abroad in a restaurant works if you just stand there looking desperate - universal language.

Hilarious sketch from Monty Python jeral!
Cherrytree how ridiculous to say the bathroom. Surely that's where you have a bath? That's one word that we can do without!

I heard that "bathroom" business on an American programme the other day, I can't remember the exact circumstances, but whatever it was, it just made me laugh out loud, the idea that the guy was about to have a bath...

If it's not a bathroom it's a restroom. I don't go there to rest either!
There was great joy at school (my period at a school for respectable girls) when we were given permission to say loo instead of lavatory.

If you’ve ever watched Judge Judy you’ll find that in the USA many dogs escape and cause problems after their owners have let them out into the yard to ‘use the restroom‘!

Re: 1 space or 2 after a full stop?
Many Americans think the bathroom / restroom thing is a bit silly, my colleagues in Massachusetts offered me directions to the toilets but in North Carolina it was the restroom
Conversely lavatory meant simply a washroom without a wc for much longer in the USA than here and I think may still do in some places - it comes up in books some times
But in England people talk about “ablutions” as a euphemism for using the loo, but it means to have a ritual wash, so where’s the difference really?

Re: 1 space or 2 after a full stop?
I too know the word ablutions as washing face and brushing teeth, probably learned from old films of soldiers queueing up with a towel slung over a shoulder as it wasn't a word learned at home.

Jeral - think we'll have to agree to disagree on the best and most easily understood way to communicate non-verbally.
If anyone wants an interesting read on the origins and development of language and its use in communication, try to get hold of a book called "The Loom of Language" by Frederick Bodmer. It was originally published in 1944 but is still a fascinating read. The prices on Amazon are eye-watering but you might be able to get it from a public library, if any still exist!

Re: 1 space or 2 after a full stop?
When I was younger, we had a family acquaintance. Ex-Indian army who had served with my uncle. His idea of a polite word for the loo was "Which way is the old thunderbox?". Shades of Evelyn Waugh...
Re: 1 space or 2 after a full stop?
Pampy, we don't need to disagree as I've said clearly that I'm quite happy for people to use whatever personal style they choose on informal message boards or similar. It is their right and their choice.
I'll look out for that book as our local library is open staffed by volunteers, although not sure during lockdown and touching books etc.
