We have, as a family, been discussing our planned trip to Cornwall in late August/early September. You might remember that this was a holiday for my parents with Mum having dialysis at Truro renal unit.

We are planning to cancel, certainly mum and dad won’t be going, even if mum was out of shielding mode I don’t think it’s right that we are using Truro’s hospital capacity when it’s such a scarce commodity. I just don’t see how tourism can get back going when any upward trend in infection rate will swamp its resources.

What is local opinion Scully?

We should’ve been in Cornwall this week ... we cancelled ages ago and were warned we might not get a full refund ... however we heard yesterday that we have been credited with the rest (over the original refund amount) including the insurance and we’ve booked the same place for next year ... a week later but for the same price. Whoopee!!!

:lol: Suffs. I think last night's announcement was mostly to pacify grandparents and other people on their own whose protestations at not seeing family have been getting louder. Those people probably won't object to the loo being used even though it's an added risk. It is a huge factor as one starts to socialise though, whether in a private garden or a park.

I'm one of "those" people but would still object to the loo being used without full disinfection after each use.

I watched the briefing last night, I thought that Chris Whitty was very clear about using the loo, and that wiping down is a bit of an understatement. Whilst I can’t recall his exact words I got the impression he was meaning a full clean and disinfectant between people from different households. He also advised to exercise caution around bbqs etc regarding the sharing of plates, serving utensils etc. Important to wash hands etc.

I got the impression that both scientists were concerned that the infection rate remains so high, the cynic me questions if this relaxing if the rules is to divert attention away from the DC affair and non appearance of the tracing app?

I think you're spot on about the concerns that scientists have about all these grandiose statements coming from no.10 - the statements are definitely an attempt to distract us mere mortals from the Rasputin affair and the non-existence of the "world beating" tracking systems.

I suspect that a lot of people, although happy to greet guests in the garden, could be put off at the prospect of allowing them in the house. Perhaps we won't be having outdoor dinner parties yet!

I don't want anyone in my house full stop but if you take the population at large, a lot won't mind one bit. I am perfectly happy to go on as I am for a good while, I'm one of those weird people who has quite enjoyed the peace of lockdown (and I am lucky enough to be able to go out walking or in a car and to shops and see some family from a distance if I choose). I do feel though that unless firm, we will be pressurised into doing things we don't want to do sooner than we feel ready in the coming months. Children will go back to school and grandparents will feel obliged to resume caring roles, dentists will open and we'll feel obliged to have a checkup because your dental insurance will be invalid without one, hairdressers will open and we'll feel disreputable because everyone else has had their hair done ... etc. Of course one can say, "No, I've decided to live my life a different way", but it will take courage and affect our social lives if we do.

It's very tricky but quite clear at the same time. OH is high risk and is having to be shielded until June 30th when we must consult the GP to see what the regulations say then. Northwick Park have already contacted us to say two of his outpatient appointments have been changed to online ones - that will be interesting as he doesn't have a scooby about what's going on - and they are sending a District Nurse to do his bloods, urine etc. (Am wondering if she'll arrive in a hazmat suit).

It would be reckless and rude (to the NHS) to meet up with the three other children and 5 grandchildren for a BBQ in these circumstances, much though we would like to and they are certainly not coming here either.

I’ve got a district nurse coming this afternoon, so I can let you know how much PPE they are wearing PP.

OH needs an annual Doppler test which is usually done at the local clinic, it involves lying down for twenty minutes, blood pressure being taken on all four limbs etc. It was due last month, and therefore postponed. They rang today to see if they could come out to the house and do it this afternoon- ever get the feeling that the caseload is unusually light at the moment?

They will come to the front door, so OH is going to use the front room for the consultation and clean it thoroughly after they leave.

That’s today’s excitement.

We too will be carrying on as we have been. There will be no visitors in the house, our garden can be accessed without passing through so short, socially distanced, visits with one or two others might happen there but probably not . We will shop online as much as we possibly can and when that's not possible take all the precautions necessary. We haven't spent the past 2 months cooped up indoors to throw it all away.
I believe in slowly relaxing the restrictions and think the current relaxation is a reasonable step IF Joe public would keep to it. Considering the attitude towards the situation by members of this forum, I find some of the recent comments re "stretching the rules" a bit of a surprise. IMHO it does not bode well for the wider adherence.

PP, district nurse came in face mask, gloves and plastic apron. She put all on at the door, did the investigation upstairs in the spare bedroom , went outside and degloved etc all into a plastic bag which she asked us to place in normal waste bin.

I was a bit surprised at the last bit, I would have assumed she would have taken clinical waste back to base for proper disposal but there is a chance that this would be her last call of the day, we are very rural, and she may not be going back to base before home.

All ok from a clinical point of view so don’t need to repeat for a year. Efficient service bearing in mind it all happened within four hours!

I'm hoping we can meet up with close friends of ours for a fell walk soon (an activity where it is very easy to maintain social distancing) but we've no plans to host a barbie or similar. Entertaining can wait until we're able to have our friends stay overnight again (most of our friends and family live too far away for a brief afternoon visit anyway).

Judging by the noise from a garden along the road, a couple of nights ago, I think it's going to be irrelevant. People have started to return to their previous habits. From now on, if you want to stay safe, it will be up to you, very few others will care.

I've been to a couple of shops recently on a single round trip and the queueing outside was all marked up and distancing was being respected, but once inside everyone was moving around with no regard for others. Including one woman who brought four kids with her and was allowed to enter with them, then they just ran around...

I've found exactly the same thing at every supermarket that I've been to, with the exception of Booths (only really in the north of England). They have 2 people outside managing the queues and thoroughly disinfecting every trolley as it's returned. It's not a huge store so they are really limiting the numbers allowed in at any one time. It's right opposite a major hospital so as well as having dedicated times for NHS and frontline staff to shop, they also put them at the front of the queue to go in at other times, which I have absolutely no problem with at all. The in-store cafe is closed to the general public but they are still serving take away food at half price for frontline staff. Even though it's about 12 miles from where I live and tends to be more expensive than the major supermarkets, I am just going to shop there from now on and will probably continue to do so when/if things eventually get back to normal.

This is why we’re not out walking in the countryside. Those poor rescuers, and in these temperatures too. It’s just not worth it.

Woman rescued from woods fall by rescue team in PPE
A mountain rescue team wearing PPE gear has been called in to evacuate an injured woman from woods in East Yorkshire.

The woman had fallen and injured her leg at Millington Woods, near Pocklington, but ambulance crews were unable to get to her with a stretcher.

Twenty-one members of Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team were involved in the four-hour operation yesterday.

I noticed the lack of distancing inside shops all through, right from the start the lockdown, people will push past me or reach in front of me in a way I’d consider rude at any time. I probably attract it because it takes me longer than average to locate an item in a display but none of them say anything like excuse me

It seems that BBQs with no distancing and not much restriction of guests is commonplace and an awful lot of families seem to have decided that relatives don’t count, even if they live in a separate household miles away

I think you're right about that! I think, especially in areas where there don't seem to be large numbers infected, people are getting blasé and believe they are safe. They don't understand statistics or risk. It's particularly worrying when you read about the numbers of Covid-19 victims who may be asymptomatic.

There are pictures from the local press, on Face Book this morning, about how crowded the riverside here was yesterday. And comments about the litter left behind! There is a restaurant/bar there which is open for takeaway only. It usually has a large outdoor area, which it has closed off, thus absolving itself of the need to clear up, but people take their plastic 'glasses' into the nearby parks and public gardens where the litter bins aren't enough to cope with the volume.
