All of those canned meats were suspect - I remember my mum sending back a tin of Fray Bentos Corned Beef that was full of green fur when it was opened, and her getting a boxful of free samples back in return.

Ye Olde Oak Ham had the opposite effect on me, I always thought it was the height of foodie sophistication as a youngster! Although I admit there was too much gloop.

My Daughter would say anything tinned in tomato sauce, and Hummous.
She also hates celery, isn't a huge fan of peppers but will tolerate them.
She won't touch weird meat with jelly on, tongue/corned beef/spam/pork pies etc which I really like.

It’s the sweet stuff that doesn’t taste of anything natural that gets to me - as well as the crème egg I’d nominate everything Haribo, strange gloops put on ice creams and above all - marshmallow fluff

That is certainly a good candidate Sue. What is it used for? I remember seeing and buying it in Brittany 25 years ago for the kids but they soon lost interest.

I had whelks once. Well one whelk. I won’t be troubling them again.

Tinned carrots of any description.
All I can taste is the tin.

Actually, lager as well.
That tastes like tinned carrots to me.

Those tinned 'All Day Breakfasts' never looked very appetising. I once saw a tinned omelette. I know that it can be a delicacy in some Far Eastern countries but it didn't look that way in the Coop in Chipping Norton.

I used to love willicks (not quite the same thing?), but I don’t think I could eat them now. As a child, I used to sit and eat then out of a brown paper bag, with a pin to flick the cap off with. To me, they tasted a bit like salted fried courgette.

Foodie hell for me? Margarine!

Willicks are winkles, aren't they?

It’s usually winkles you eat with a pin, I haven’t tried any in years

I’ve not liked whelks from seafood stalls but I have had them beautifully tender in a restaurant

Digressing a bit but cockles freshly gathered and cooked are a different thing entirely than those usually sold in jars, or even loose on seafood stalls. :yum

Talking of which, I ordered 3 jars of pickled cockles for someone with my grocery order. Sainsburys can only supply one jar and have substituted 2 jars of pickled mussels. Friend doesn't like them. Too much of a faff to return so I'll keep them - what on earth does one do with them?

Jars of cockles are a vinegary abomination IMO. Fresh cockles can be lovely, depending upon the substrate they've lived on they can be gritty.

Whelks are definitely a divisive issue. My dad loved them, I don't dislike them but they wouldn't be my first choice at the whelk stall or on an assiette de fruits de mer.

I love jellied eels but rarely have them these days.

My problem with the British seafood stall is the malt vinegar (or even non-brewed condiment) and white pepper dust that seems obligatory

Cockles without vinefpgar are delicious but tend to be a bit gritty, they really aren’t any different from expensive clams

Tinned macaroni cheese, spaghetti or spaghetti hoops are my idea of food hell, as is the tinned mixed veg you get that has both swede and green beans in it and to me has the weirdest taste.
I don't mind tinned ham, gloop and all nor crème eggs

As a lad (this is over half a century ago) I used to love 'London Grill' which was baked beans with bacon, sausage & kidney. I think it was a Crosse & Blackwell product but can't really remember. No idea if it's still made and if so whether it would be the same or if I'd like it.

Agree with the anything flowery or soapy in food. Violets, rose, lavender. I have to put coriander (leaf) in that category too. Tastes like soap to me.

I can live with London Grill, but how could I have forgotten tinned spaghetti!

Me too. And veg spag bol and ravioli. I have to be in the right mood for it though. It's a bit slippery :? Canned ravioli au gratin with garlic seasonsing, extra herbs, bread crumbs and cheese was a frequent 'arrived in France too late to go to the shops' meal. It's... ok!

OH likes the mac cheese. Mind you I think he lived on Eastern Eueopean tinned veg pate and you based stuff in cans when he was in Germany (and gravadlax.)

Canned mock duck strikes fear in to me. Every now and again I buy it but daren't quite try it.
