Foodie Hell
My suggestion for a prime contender. Is there ANYTHING on that label design that tempts you?
Feel free to post links to your suggestions for other contenders. Pot Noodle is not admissible, because it's not food...

Re: Foodie Hell
That made me laugh out loud, Sakkarin. You are quite right about the label and it's contents.
Camp Coffee, although having a delightful name, springs to mind as a thing that might be in food hell too. Mind you I have never actually tried it. Part of me is pleased that something that's clearly from another era still exists. Just don't ask me to drink it.

Re: Foodie Hell
Sadly Camp features in my foodie upbringing, because as a kid it was what we usually got at home instead of coffee, or occasionally the cheapest, nastiest instant granules. Both versions were made with hot milk rather than water. I didn't mention Camp, because I think some people here like it as an ingredient. And technically it's not really coffee is it?

Whenever I go to Wing Yip I always have a poke around the freezers to see what monstrosities they have in them amongst the goodies. Large bags of chicken feet are very popular but they really don’t tempt me.
And Parma violets are another thing I can’t understand. Why buy sweets that smell of soap?

But it makes excellent ‘coffee ‘ icing for a family coffee walnut cake.

I tried chicken feet at a Dim Sum restaurant a few years ago and quite liked them!
My food hell doesn't change, jam, rice pudding, peppers, celery.
I don't count Quorn or artificial sweeteners as they are not food.

Re: Foodie Hell
No but it was foodie hell, not coffee hell?! And I am sure we will disagree about what goes in foodie hell anyway...? I'd put Pearce Duff (or indeed any brand) Blancmange in there, for example. And Tunnock's Snowballs.
Post service church coffee in the seventies was Nescafe (or possibly Mellow Birds) boiled up in milk. I think we (my father, sister and I) started buying 'real' coffee when I was about 17. It was a post church treat at home, though, not an everyday thing.
Chicken feet for sure, PP. And probably pigs ears and tails. But then I would probably put all mear in anyway...
I am also with you on parma violets. Cherry lips too. Anything floral, really. My father loved rose and volet creams. I wonder if dislike of them isgenetic, as of coriander and sprouts.

Why is Quorn not a food? You can eat it, it has nutritional content, so surely it is a food. It's being 'artificial' doesn't really matter, surely.

Re: Foodie Hell
Camp does contain some coffee, though more chicory and sugar. We stayed in Zagreb a couple of years ago and there seemed to be two different coffees on offer, on sampling one was actually just chicory. Unusual.

Re: Foodie Hell
My foodie hell things are
Anything with coconut in - even milk or oil because i can't bear the smell either.
Celery
coriander leaf unless there is a little in some Mexican dishes (don't ask !)
parsley, tarragon and dishes containing them
sickly sweet puddings/baked goods/sauces
white chocolate
Creme Eggs
any foods with a floral flavouring - doesn't matter whether it's rose, parma voilets or lavender
offal such as liver or kidney unless it's in haggis, faggots or pate
It feels like we've gone back into the 'what do you dislike that everyone else loves' territory here, or am I missing the point?

Re: Foodie Hell
Are we looking for things most people would agree had no place in a foodie’s life, or just things from our personal hell?
I’d nominate the Hawaiian pizza (which actually originated in Canada) in both categories, but I know there are people who would defend it using their fists

Re: Foodie Hell
I was thinking branded products really rather than ingredients, so Creme Eggs is a definite contender...

Re: Foodie Hell
I’ve never knowingly tried camp coffee and hope never to!
I can’t stand Horlicks or equivalent either.
Send the creme eggs my way though

I took it to mean branded products rather than ingredients which we covered a while back . I hate ye olde oak tinned ham with that layer of fat round the side , same with spam
