Re the Alligator, I love it!
Talk about excellent, the dice is finer than I do with a knife too. I'll be getting the slicer attachment, and the mini-chopper too for sure.
Dead easy to clean.
Some are definitely harder than others. We have some with little nibble sized chips out of them, & others that are older but with no damage. Lakeland sold them for a while, theirs were somewhere in between in quality I seem to remember. I'm amazed they never caught on more.

Would you mind posting a link to the one you got please Gill? I'm definitely interested in getting one.

The "Rick Stein Moment"
Yep. Been there, done that; and I think there´s an Anthony Worrall-Thompson video where the guy is doing the same with garlic, and then... expletives deleted.
That´s what the guard is for.

Sure thing, Pampy.
IMO, you do want/need the 2 piece - small dice, and medium chip size. This is the plastic one, it seems robust.
I think there is a metal one out there if you are worried, but I've got lots of plastic things in my kitchen. There's a 3 piece one with a slicer too but the price went up too much for my comfort zone.

When I saw Rick Stone at the NEC, I was really disappointed.
He cooked nothing himself and had a team of his own chefs prepare a mediocre meal. All rather uncomfortable, compared to some of the other chefs.
In a "here's one I made earlier" moment, he showed the mandolin video, just to add to the uncomfortable-ness.
Lights up, and he put a meal up for the audience's delight that had been made the previous day.
Hmmmmmm.

I finally found the slicer - very mixed reviews. But only one thickness of slice (fairly thin) and only works with quite small items. Think I’ll keep going with the food processor

Oh, I see what you mean. I'll stick to my knives for slicing.
Talking of processors, I'm still very impressed with my Bosch compact processor.
I was worried about the size (compared to my Kenwood predecessor), but I need not. Large enough for any project.

A while ago I read on here that someone said that they had some mini-tongs, which they liked. I saw some in Sainsbury’s and got them, and yes, they are brilliant!
Then I got all sorts of good advice about a Scanpan.
Recently a mini-cranked palate knife came up. Good old Sainsburys had one and it is another winner.
Thank you all! Now, what do I need To get next?

Marvellous. I've only used mine for onion so far.
No more crying!

Ha, funnily enough I just posted on KK's carrot cake thread about my fear of microplane graters! I've been tempted to get one and then always stopped myself as I just KNOW I'd have a nasty accident

that's good to know, thanks Gill. I have problems cutting onions as my eyes burn and stream with tears so much. This seems like it will solve that
Mine arrived yesterday and I tried it out today ... not as much pressure required as I would have thought . If I could change anything, it would be to have a choice between the large (chip) attachment and the slicer... I will use the slicer quite a lot, but will hardly every use the chip chopper So, like Gill, I will need to get the slicer attachment now
Re: another gadget I've not seen before
I was almost tempted by the Alligator, but now I'm not sure! Someone said that it needed a good thump and elsewhere someone said that carrots needed to be sliced thinly.

Re: another gadget I've not seen before
I'm about to check the chipper attachment tonight on my carrots.
Patsy, Sue said the slicer attachment hasn't got very good reviews, so I'm not bothered about getting one.
Renee, it doesn't need much force, just a confident bit of pressure.
I've been cutting onions nicely for a week. It's the one job I least like in the kitchen. (used to).

And I have now discovered the slicer is not an attachment, but another thing entirely and as expensive as what we have already bought.
Yes, Renee, it doesn't need a thump, just a good press down. ( edited to add that I just leant into it, so my bodyweight helped - if you know what I mean ) Peppers work well too, another thing that is a bit of a faff. I may just chop all my remaining onions and freeze them down.
Re: another gadget I've not seen before
My bodyweight will certainly help then! I'm sure that I'll be able to cope!
Thanks!
Thanks!
