I think the fact that I am still watching it is proof otherwise! I would probably have said the same as you prior to watching it.
The problem with these programmes is there's a point where you get drawn in, which is the point of no return...
However I suggest you check one out, they're down to the last 5 now so there's not much more to go (it's on the W channel). If you have an open mind I guarantee there will not be a dud recipe. The series feature previous contestants, most of whom are now successful in their own right.
When I started watching the series I was fast forwarding to the judging. Now the cooking is so good I'm watching the wholle programme, and have been for some while. Theere is a downside in that they often use native ingredients which we have no way of appreciating.

I would love to try finger limes, I also envy the range of fish and shell fish.Sakkarin wrote:Theere is a downside in that they often use native ingredients which we have no way of appreciating.

My jaw dropped when Laura finished off her mushroom dish yesterday with about a hundred quid's worth of truffle shavings...

Finger limes are ok - a bit of a novelty when they're used in dishes that you can actually tell that they've been used (eg in a salad dressing or over fish). They're really expensive here in the UK - I bought 250g for £14.95 (although to be fair, there were quite a few as they are small and light). Ocado have just started selling them too - £3.99 for 2!

Last night's challenge seemed extroardinarily duff for one which was to decide the first semifinalist. The "Mystery Box" had a British flag on it, so for a moment I thought it could be interesting. What the challenge turned out to be was that they had to make a dish starring one item from Gordon Ramsay's fridge, which were:
Cathedral Cheddar - I wonder how much he got for that product placement...
Bream
Scallops
Rhubarb
Strawberries
Branston Pickle
White Cabbage
Pimms
...and they had to sneak paprika in there somewhere too.

I wondered that too, I am sure that he usually uses artisan Cheddar, especially in his "first" home in Cornwall. My immediate reaction was that our kitchen fridge holds more exciting items than thatSakkarin wrote: I wonder how much he got for that product placement...

Yes, it was a bit stereotypical I suppose.
Although I really like the one who went out he was outclassed, and has been for a while imo.

Similarly several who deserved to be in the final have fallen by the wayside! Can't look till the end as I don't want to risk seeing the final results, but I shall be looking to find out who ended up producing the most dishes, it must be nudging 100 they've had to dream up over the course of the series.
Australian Masterchef Series 12
Oh dear, I don't like all the boohooing! For anyone who hasn't followed it, three of the four finalists are longstanding mates, last night all three were in tears, and one of the judges. I wonder if that palliness means they only recruit contestants that live near the studio? Meanwhile the fourth finalist (probably winner) was grinning from ear to ear throughout.

Sadly, I inadvertently found out who won.
No spoilers though, not even to J.

Oh dear that's brutal after 100 hours or more of programmes!
I always wait till it's half recorded so I can skip through if I need to, hence able to post this.

Melissa seemed to be wearing a sweet wrapper tonight.
Re: Masterchef is upon us
Well I think she's cute.
Oh dear, the blubbing upped a fair few degrees!!!!
The strangest moment for me was when Reynold didn't "elbow nudge" the other two contestants on his way out. My impression of him plummeted at that moment.

I think that I have may have seen part of a trailer for British MC Professionals.
Those girls have favourites from the beginning. at least one of them should have been eliminated earlier, too much pasta

Ah, is that the one that's coming around? Seeing the discussion about Oz, I had been thinking about it here and was trying to remember which it was that announces the winner just before Christmas.

A predictable event plus a lot of padding in the programme
Re: Masterchef is upon us
I want to look back and see if I can work out who cooked the most dishes in the series, but meanwhile, I see that the very first programme, the winners were Emelia, Laura, Reynold and Dani, Dani winning overall, beating the three ACTUAL finalists in the immunity challenge.
I felt her departure was a bit odd when it happened, made a nonsense of the immunity pin.

EDIT: I see from that Wiki page that Laura worked in Jock Z's restaurant for TWO YEARS!!!!
Hmmm.
