We make our own bread so we’ve always got several weeks’ supply of bread flour in the cupboard. I don't let stocks run down. I’ll get some more in next time I see some but there’s no rush

One thing puzzled me ... a woman on the radio said her local supermarket had run out of loo rolls and SODA WATER?!?!?!

Walking back from the library this afternoon, passing the Co-op, just inside the doorway is a large display of Andrex 9 roll packs for £3.95. A few hundred yards away, Waitrose customers are scratching their heads 'cos there were no toilet rolls. But Waitrose did have hand gel - it's at the back end of an aisle so everyone's missing them.

On a serious note, the Government and media sources don't seem to realise there's a difference between panic buying everything in sight (none of the symptoms suggest extra loo roll will be needed) and making sure you have a basic stock of non-perishable food in case you have to self-isolate for 2 weeks.

The advice for self isolaters with symptoms is to put rubbish in a black plastic bag and place it in another one. Panic buying should include those as well! ;)

I've no doubt that some government ministers will be quick to castigate shirkers but the bigger worry is the huge number of people who can't afford to so won't self-isolate.

Two humorous news snippets:

- Someone saying that the UK gov't was managing Covid 19 so well that we've avoided the Italy total shut down measure. Eh what? As airport arrivals checking is scant and the only "action" is telling us to wash our hands, I'd say luck is playing a bigger part so far.

- Stockpiling in the US: Most bought item = bullets. :?

from what i gathered from the news, this morning, about the 'shutdown' in italy - it only effects residents - holiday makers aren't included so can still travel to and from. did i hear it wrongly?

scullion, it seems to be a lockdown with exceptions. Perhaps people leaving Italy will be someone else's problem?

Re UK doing well, I vaguely heard that Italians weren't faring well as flu wasn't typical generally. Perhaps we UK-ites have built more resilience given the number of colds and flu we've grown up with all our lives?

Apparently Manhattan is making shutdown noises. Given its population density, I'm not surprised they'd be scared.

Without sounding crude I don’t get the whole toilet roll rush . I. Plus understand if the illness was stomach/gastric related but it’s not and even if you were self isolated and ran out , I’m sure there’s other things people use .

Also with toilet rolls , don’t most people keep at least three in stock anyway ? I never wait until I’m on my last roll before buying some

I buy things like toilet rolls and kitchen roll when they're on offer at Costco or Makro. I currently have 140 toilet rolls and 32 giant-sized Bounty rolls - not much chance of me running out in the next year or two!

oh dear, i feel under geared - we have less than a tenth of your stash (of both items)!
if we run out we may have to resort to the roman style of a sponge on a stick - or find a swan!

I didn't plan to have such a big stock - it's just that there were offers too good to be missed on the things!

Pampy we buy things we know we'll use regularly when they're on offer. Last Wednesday it was Andrex 16 pack of toilet rolls for £4.50. I put Helman's on our Sunday list, it now sits in the cupboard alongside one that was bought recently. Olive oil is another favourite and at one time we had four packs of dishwasher tablets, all bought when they were £6 instead of £10!

I do the same - just makes sense...….!

Though I did read earlier on that people in Chelsea were panic buying hummus & coconut water...……………………. :D

Can I point out that if you are self-isolating at home and worried about running out of toilet paper you can use much less of it and then WASH like most of the worlds population?

I would say that is normal hygiene routine anyway isn't it.

But if you are incapacitated then might be difficult/impossible - that's when good wipes come into their own - probably now in short supply too.

Yup - got them too - 3 boxes of 10 packs each, with 60 in each pack!
