Rubbish Recipes

Postby Sakkarin » Sun Feb 23, 2020 6:40 pm

I've got some chicken legs to use up, and as I've made some Italian dishes recently, was surprised to find how few chicken recipes there were in my Italinish cookbooks, and there was really nothing that really grabbed my attention, so I broadened my search for inspiration, and found this wretched recipe in a very popular 1963 cookbook. Anyone any idea what the recipe calls itself? It's NOT "Chicken Curry", and the clue is that there's a placename in the title. It is served with spiced apricots, pickled cucumber and boiled rice with prawns and green peppers. The original recipe used 2 small chickens, I've halved the quantities.

Anyone any other rubbish recipes they've encountered recently?

Is it Chicken Maryland?

I've got several old cookery books with 'exotic' recipes that would be considered totally inauthentic these days. I guess they arose at a time when authentic ingredients just weren't readily available in the UK.

However, some of them are quite delicious if you overlook the fact that they aren't authentic. I still use a Nasi Goreng recipe from a Good Housekeeping book published in 1973, although I doubt anyone from where it originates would recognise it.

On the other hand - from the same book - there is a recipe for tinned peach halves stuffed with cheddar and parmesan cheese and coated with a sauce made from cream cheese blended with cream. Serve as a starter with a salad garnish. I did actually make it once, back in the 70s!

HAAA! CHICKEN MARYLAND! We know all about that don't we!?! Nope though.

I have to say I found a recipe for Chicken Maryland in one of my cookbooks the other day, and was tempted to give it a bash! Can't remember which one it was now though.

I could probably dig out several of my older cookbooks that would have raisins and apples as primary ingredients for curries.

The rice with prawns and green peppers makes me think ‘gumbo’...but no place name.

And no okra!

Although I wonder what people used to use here before okra was widely available. I guess runner beans have a similar consistency if boiled longer than you'd expect.

I think we would have used a gelatinous bit of meat to provide the gooeyness

Is the recipe Tandoori chicken?

First okra I had was canned, and I think labelled Ladies Fingers, I suspect you could dig that out if you really wanted to any time after rationing ended
Had a very nice bindi bhaji on Thursday, definitely fresh

Marengo has a tomato sauce and the curry powder makes me think we are heading towards Asia, even if not very surely

I reckon it could be an Australian dish. Is there such a thing as chicken Melbourne?

Nope!

Coincidentally, when I used the "speechnotes" phone app to make a list of all the recipes in my Prawn Cocktail Years book a few days ago, It made some hilarious mistakes, one of which was that Peach Melba was recognised as Beach Melbourne. Here's the whole list of the sillies:

She Swallows (Vichyssoise)
Cookie Fan Jack (Coquilles St-Jacques)
Silver Ronaq (Sole Veronique)
To The Meadows Rhossili (Tournedos Rossini)
Beach Melbourne (Peach Melba)
Argos (Asparagus)
Earth Or Jelly (Oeufs En Gelee)
Song (Consomme)
Tony (Mulligatawny)
Hamlet (Spanish Omelette)
Rumbarber (Rhum Baba)
To Love Marianne (Moules Mariniere)
Cook Over (Cheese Fondue)
After Tui (Ratatouille)
Coffee Table (Profiteroles)
Tony (Minestrone)
Battle Of Britain (Fegato Veneziana)
Sean Pre-Owned Electric Jumping Jack, Sean Penn, Jumping You Electric (Champignons A La Grecque)
Show (Gazpacho)
Duct A Large (Duck À L'Orange)
Warn You Also Take To (Rognons Sautés Turbigo)
Over (Pavlova)

Is it Chicken Madras?

Many of the 1960/70s recipe books had dubious content. I think Marguerite Patten was the main culinary criminal. Apricots and other fruit horrors in meat recipes.

The worst one was Indian Shepherds Pie, which just had tinned spices stirred into the mix. No attempt at frying with onion first. Ghastly dish.

The Marengo Plain is in Italy - Napoleon won a victory there https://www.britannica.com/event/Battle-of-Marengo

Yes, but the dish, chicken marengo, was named after Napoleons horse.

Apologies Pampy..just read that that was an apocryphal story!
Anyway, the many recipes for the dish seem nothing like what we are looking for.
