Gary Rhodes Retrospective

Postby Sakkarin » Sat Feb 15, 2020 2:25 pm

There's a retrospective look at Gary Rhodes on ITV+1 in 15 minutes' time. Note that it's on +1, the normal time showing has nearly finished.

I've got it my Skybox on record.

Oh dear, just watched 5 minutes of it, and it's Ainsley Harridan narrating it, so it's going to be extremely hard work, I find him as grating as a blackboard being scraped with fingernails...

Back to it later, need to go shopping whilst there's a pause in the rain.

I love Ainsley and I enjoyed the programme although I could have done without Aldo Zilli and Candice Brown. I thought it was a nice tribute albeit not very deep. Nice to see Thane Prince on telly again too. And for once I was very impressed by Gordon Ramsay.

Good grief, one of Rhodes's contemporaries, virtually unrecognisable! Maybe you saw the article, if you didn't, any idea who this is without "imagesearching"?

He looks vaguely familiar, but I've no idea who he is!

Thanks so much for the link, PP! I found the story of his life very interesting and I'm liking him more and more now.

I particularly remember his TV appearance demonstrating his "Chicken with 40 cloves of garlic", which I acknowledge him as the originator of, although I've seen earlier very similar recipes, so he isn't really. Seems like yesterday, but given that he lost control of his self-named restaurant 18 years ago now, I guess it wasn't.

I've got his "Italian Kitchen" book, published in 1996, so it's 24 years old!

I watched it and really enjoyed it, Gordon Ramsay in particular came across so well.

Thought I saw this on the ITV hub. Also on the download network

I liked what I saw. Gordo was a very plesant surprise. Why was Zilli there?? He seemed constipated or something.

Many years ago there was a 4 episode series called the way we cook. One epi had graham Kerr and fanny craddock. One had Gary Rhodes and someone. Another had nigella and one had Jamie oliver and one had Delia.

Didn't he do ready steady room for a time?? The hair and the pants....

No, Gary Rhodes never did RSC. He did do Masterchef for a while though.

That was a major mistake, it was dreadful with him at the helm! From what I remember, just two courses, barely enough time to get your apron on to prepare them, and the judges were poorly chosen too. I stopped watching it after a few programmes.
