Wow Renee, I never knew that, thanks and I'll pass it on to my BiL who recently was put on statins because of high cholesterol.

The French aren’t specially healthy?
There’s something called the Mediterranean paradox, in which people in Southern Europe live longer than the Europeans average, and those in the north less.
It is often ascribed to diet, but in fact there’s a case for saying it correlates better with exposure to sunlight, specially in winter.
Anything that affects health over an 80 year period is likely to be complicated!

I think this is very much a case where we have the correlation but don’t know what causes it.
I read an interesting meta analysis and discussion in one of the medical journals (BMJ I think, not sure) a while back
It probably comes down to a range of factors but I’ve no real idea how you pick them out - diet, drink, exercise, pollution, climate, genetics, work/life balance …
