Supermarket Sushi
I laughed when they opened a sushi outlet in Asda a few months back, but it still seems to be going, and presumably prompted Tesco to follow suit, as I laughed even louder when I spotted that they've opened a tiny Yo! Sushi in my Tesco. The Yo! Sushi in the town centre seems quite popular, so maybe that's got a bearing on it.
Re: Supermarket Sushi
In Asda? whatever next! The sushi rolls in the supermarkets don't seem to contain raw fish.
I used to take my granddaughter to Yo! Sushi in Manchester, but after paying for several small bowls and being charged for each one, it came rather expensive, so we chose Cote Brasserie after that which she liked.

Re: Supermarket Sushi
The sushi counter in Islington Waitrose gets very busy.
Are we surprised?

Re: Supermarket Sushi
i find sushi underwhelming - even the stuff i've made myself - but then i'm not a fan of plain, gooey rice.
there aren't many outlets down here - just the supermarkets.

Re: Supermarket Sushi
The Korean ones have less rice, more meatier filling, a whole different ball game...

Re: Supermarket Sushi
Our local Waitrose has been decimated with a new refurbishment.
It now runs out of many basics.
But has a huge sushi counter, with several staff - like Wholefoods does.
I've tried their offerings, but they are mostly crumb coated with overpowering onion pieces. You can barely taste the wasabi for it.
I'll have another look today, and see if I can get some without that particular coating, as I do like sushi as a lunch.

Re: Supermarket Sushi
I've just been reading about the Waitrose sushi, Gill and there seem to be many types. Some are coated in sesame seeds and others have a spicy coating.

Re: Supermarket Sushi
Talk about jumping on the bandwagon, Renee! Or maybe Waitrose started the sushi ball (bandwagon) rolling first, we don't have a proper one here, only a couple of diddy Waitroses, so I would have been oblivious. Asda opened their sushi counter 15 months ago...

(Update, Waitrose have had them for 5 years...)
Onion pieces? I have several sushi books and I don't recall onion being mentioned!
I see that Yo! Sushi now have double exposure in Tesco - there is now a shelfful (had to check how to spell that...) of Yo! Sushi products in the World Food section; condiments, cooking pastes, etc.
Having flicked through my Japanese/Sushi books, I see there's a form of sushi which is wrapped in tofu skin. I've had a pack of that for years and wondered what to do with it - although I've probably thrown it out, when I say years, I mean YEARS. There are also some tofu dishes in my books - I was wondering what to use my second block of firm tofu for, but they all look very bland. Might trigger off some ideas though.

The same here - cold gooey rice just doesn't do it for me - now sashimi is a different kettle of fish
Re: Supermarket Sushi
Even my local moderate size Sainsburys has sushi now, and seems very popular. Not for me, don't care for either raw fish or the gooey rice (though I love rice pudding!)

Dug it out, use by date: 20/06/2010
Is that Sainos one a proper manned sushi "bar" too, preparing fresh sushi, like the Asda and Tesco (and I presume Waitrose) ones?
Re: Supermarket Sushi
No, the local Sains has it ready made (like the local Waitrose too), but the 'big' one a couple of miles away does it on site.
Re: Supermarket Sushi
Oh dear, here's the saddest offering from my sushi books, a ball of rice with a mushroom on top...
Re: Supermarket Sushi
I think you have the wrong book, Sakks! I've never seen anything so horrible looking!
Re: Supermarket Sushi
I would have to use a knife and fork to eat that!
I think I had a pack of something similar to your tofu skin. Was it bean curd skin or wrap? I can't quite remember now but I ended up throwing it out! I did have something wrapped in it at a Chinese restaurant and enjoyed it at the time.
We have one large Waitrose in my area but they certainly don't have a sushi bar. Maybe they will come to the north west one day.

Re: Supermarket Sushi
It's this stuff (although nothing like that silly price!). I can't remember if it was rock hard or pliable when I bought it. It is certainly rock hard now:

But I see they make ready-made tofu pockets too...

Yes, that's the one that I bought several years ago, but it wasn't that silly price. I seem to remember that they weren't very pliable, although I didn't open the packet.
I rather like the ready made tofu pockets.

Re: Supermarket Sushi
The pictures from Sakkarin’s book are a little worrying, I thought the second was dolly mixtures at first
Iceland do frozen sushi at £3 a pack. Not exciting but by no means awful, more than I can eat at one lunch time
