That makes me extremely angry Petronius

In fact I might throw a tantrum

There is of course no evidence whatsoever that a Whole Food Plant-Based diet will help, with or without any specific co-morbidity

I bet that if you do your "research" by Googling WFPB it will come up with loads - because it will have been carefully planted on propaganda sites,

Can we all make a pact to destroy these despicable, lying, chain letters and not spread them further? Some are based on diet - some are not, they are all pure fantasy. Check the source of all "information" carefully, accept only from reputable sources

The British Dietetic Association has very clear advice, including that you can't "boost" your immune system with diet or supplements

I do wonder if in the upcoming weeks, people will eat more plant based if meat becomes more scarce?

I made a nice black bean chilli tonight, cumin, ground coriander, cayenne, gsrlic, onions, courgettes, passata, onions and mushroooms, plus the beans all chucked in the slow cooker for a couple of hours and served with homemade wedges and cheese. The girls wolfed it down though terribly unauthentic, but good cheap tasty and healthy

Unfortunately they aren’t spoofs, and they certainly aren’t humorous

The last person in a chain, and these are essentially chain letters, may well be naïve/stupid enough to pass it on in good faith

But the person who wrote the original, and carefully planted the suggestion to search for WFPB, certainly knew what they were doing They are despicable. They are deliberately setting out to scare people

There are so many of these “helpful” suggestions for how to cope. All are lies and we should try to stop spreading them.

Sue, sorry to upset you, but that is not a chain letter, I've spent hours researching the links and it makes no difference. For example despite giving him concrete research, he firmly believes the Norwegians survived the war by eating a plant based diet.

Years ago he posted here as Paulthebread.

Something that really gets my goat is the many claims that this food or that drink can "detox" the body. Absolute balderdash - there's only 2 things that can detoxify the body - the liver and the kidneys.

Yes, I guessed who it came from of course
And I really don’t believe he originated all the text, I’ve seen very similar mails from all around
The WFPB stuff is certainly not something he has originated, it’s very much out there and it’s commercialised
Why you would waste hours “researching” it I don’t know

I am also somewhat dubious about the WFPB diet guarding against diabetes as well, considering that all fruit and veg have various levels of carbohydrate levels in them which us diabetics have to be careful of. this is why a lot of Type 2's have adopted the keto diet which is protein and fat based.

Of course there isn´t, Sue, but when you become a wild-eyed, zombie-like fanatic of something, there´s no argument. Radical Vegans, the Extinction movement, PETA, ISIS and, back in the 70s when I was at university, The Socialist Workers Party. It´s impossible to argue against any of these because they don´t accept they are ever wrong.
I don´t get angry about it; I just sigh and walk away.
And when you look at it, a veggie diet probably does have a lot of advantages, just as any diet. But there are a million other factors as well - a vegan who smokes and drinks and never does any exercise, for example? 8-)
I´m going to stick to my 95% veggie diet - with eggs and cheese - but I´ve no guarantee that I´ll be healthier or less healthy than any other.

Because

Check the source of all "information" carefully, accept only from reputable sources

Some of our coffee group do believe he knows what he's talking about.

In the latter part of my working life I was teaching and assessing at post graduate level.

Thus all research is/was based on reading peer reviewed published papers in scientific journals. The hurdle I had to overcome is some commentators also use peer reviewed published papers to cherry pick their arguments, what Festinger (1965) described as confirmatory bias. I can provide a few links if you fancy Sue. ;)

However, for my own well being I’ve decided to stop.

Strictly, your post was most useful, I’ll mention it to my dear SiL. Do you know of anyone whose been medically advised to follow a keto diet and have stayed on it for any length of time?

I'm afraid that I follow the "everything in moderation" diet, with certain exclusions because I have diabetes. You have to be careful following a keto diet because long term high protein intake has been linked to heart problems. And high fat intake has its own (obvious) drawbacks.

the keto diet was originally worked out for some of those with autism , where it seems to have a beneficial effect on some of the signs.
we tried the diet for a short while - apart from being quite boring neither of us felt good on it.
as we don't have diabetes we just went back to eating normally - what a relief.

I think the extreme therapeutic version of the keto diet is for juvenile epilepsy?

It reduces the seizure rate

you are right, silly me, but there are also studies which suggest the improvement in some of the signs of autism, too.

I work with autism and epilepsy and it has been suggested particularly in epilepsy , a keto diet has been particularly effective in preventing seizures. I think in the current situation it’d be fairly difficult to follow a keto diet

If it’s being done as a therapy, it absolutely needs to be done under the supervision of a dietitian with specific training, not diy

Most “keto” diets don’t actually achieve ketosis, which is what controls the seizures it seems, I read a good article about it by a registered dietitian

Medical profession’s being using keto diets for seizures for about 100 years.

An ex-SiL (lovely fella) has a FB page about his keto diet. We worry for him.

Some elite athletes (cycling) use low carb diets before racing, then change it, not sure if it involves ketosis, but those guys are monitored endlessly by doctors.

I think the athletes, cyclists and marathon runners are doing something different, they run down the levels of glycogen (a simple carbohydrate made up from glucose) then push their body stores up to maximum before the race, so that the glycogen can top up their blood sugar when they run out.

How the months have flown by since Veganuary, and it's now nearly Vegune.

Just spotted this recipe for vegan butter which intrigued me. Wondered if any of our borderline vegans had tried anything like it.

Thanks for that recipe, Sakkarin, which I'll certainly pass on to my vegan friends.
